110v Grunert to 12v fridge conversion?

I've been looking at a lot of boats lately, and one that I saw recently had a very nice fridge/freezer setup with two Grunert holding plates, but the unit is 110V. While the boat has a generator, I hate the idea of being a slave to running the generator everyday. Is it possible to add a 12V Danfoss compressor to the system to cool the existing cold plates? Or would I be stuck having to add the entire adler barber system, further shrinking the size of the box? I was thinking it would be nice if I could run the system with 12V most of the time but use the 110 when the gen is running. I'm not sure if a 12v compressor is capable of sufficiently cooling down those holding plates.
