Stuffing Box acceptable temp?

I have a 2004 Hunter 466 with a 75 HP Yanmar. In the 3.5 years I have had the boat I have never had a stuffing box issue (honestly I never really check it) and have spent the past 1.5 years cruising Mexico. Recently I asked a Delivery Captain to bring it back to CA and he indicated the stuffing box was running at 122 degrees and felt it was too hot. I wondered what an acceptable temperature range is?

122 degrees.... is that like luke warm water? I would think that's not an issue... He was likely motoring hard and fast to get back up the Baja cost I would imagine...

Re: Stuffing Box acceptable temp?

Depends on water temp, 122F is not bad at all in 90 water, but higher than I'd like to see if the water is 50F.
Hate to not answer, but usually answer is not too warm to keep your hand on it, and 122 I can easily hold all day long.
Good Capt though, shows he was on top of things and checking, many don't.
