Propeller won't turn, nor go into gear

After sailing to an anchorage yesterday I started the engine and it would start but would not go into gear. Now it won't go into reverse or forward. Sailed into a marina here and figured it was a cable issue, cables seem to be fine. Had a diver check today and no rope is around the propeller and the propeller won't turn. Any ideas? Am I going to have to get hauled out?

sounds like your gear box has siezed,disconnect the propellor shaft coupling and see if the prop shaft turns,if the prop turns then you will probably need to remove the gearbox this can be done in the water,if it is the prop shaft that is siezed then it is an out of the water job.

Will the lever on the trans not move? Does it stall when you try to put it in gear? Does the lever on the trans move but nothing happens? There are lots of things that can cause your problems

I had a flange fail, with similar symptoms. It was fixed without a haul out.

The lever will only move when I push in the button to use as throttle up. It will not budge when trying to put it into gear

Also if the shaft is seized, does that mean a new shaft?

You need to do some more basic investigating. Theoretically the problem could be the throttle lever at the helm, the linkage/cables, or the transmission it self.

try disconnecting the cables from the shifter lever on the transmission. then see if you can manually shift the trans (you can do this with the engine off) If it wont budge then you are probably looking at a new trans. If it will move then your problem is either the cables or the throttle lever at the helm.

Break your system down into separate components and then start testing one at a time. Think through how the trans works. Then proceed in an order. You seem to be worrying about lots of different things with out having much tangible evidence for people to help you out.

Looks like it's going to be a transmission rebuild. Took gear shift cable off and the shift lever would go forward and reverse freely. Put cable back on and it would now go forward but not reverse, however still would not shift it into gear. Manually shifted it into gear and it was sluggish and wouldn't engage.
