How to grease a Volvo Penta shaft seal

I have recently discovered that my Volvo Penta propellor shaft seal needs annual greasing. The official instructions are not much help.

Is it possible to do this while the boat is in the water?

What is the best way of getting the grease in past the lip seal?

Any help appreiated.

Re: How to grease a Volvo Penta shaft seal

OK, job done, but in case its any use to others...

Can be done with boat in water, no problem. Some water will leak out, but not enough to worry about and it is easy to get the grease in against the water flow.

Couldn't find Mac Donalds here, but discovered that a dinking staw from just about any other outlet works just as well, as long as its flexible and can be squeezed flat.

Fill it with waterproof grease (I used the Volvo Penta official version).
Squeeze seal to open it slightly at top (this is when some water comes in).
Insert flattenned tip of straw just about 5mm and squeeze all the grease out of straw into seal.
Extract staw and repeat until about 1cc grease has been injected.

Re: How to grease a Volvo Penta shaft seal

I use glue syringes to get the Volvo grease into the seal. I set the grease in a warm place for a few minutes to soften it up and then fill the syringe and put it into the seal. Pretty easy if the grease is soft. I bought the syringes at Rockler, which is a wood workers store.
