Steel Motoryatch Opinion

Dear all,

First of all , İ would like thank all of you because of your comments which you will share with me. Unfortunately in my country peoples are not prefer to use steel boats.

İ would like to buy one of custom design boat for commercial usage.Like daily boat trip for group of people in Aegean Sea. İ need your advice and comments..

İ would like to buy a boat. The hull is steel and accommodation is aliminium. It has been made on 2005. Lenght is 12m. Builder was owner of the boat. He is engineer of ship construction. Since over year.

The boat stayed on shore about 5years. The seller advised me that, they did maintenance on hull. But bilge area needs to be maintenance.

And unfortunately they covered deck surface with teak:/ But as ı read, nobody advice teak surface.

I’m looking forward to get good news and advices from your sides.

Welcome. Looks like a nice boat (although the loose carpeting -- visible in one of the interior pictures -- seems a bit odd).

I don't know anything about steel hulls or aluminum superstructures, though. Perhaps you could find a local ship's surveyor who specializes in steel hulls? Or maybe you could temporarily hire and "import" a specialist like that from the Netherlands or similar?

Welcome to the forum Worldwidenaviga.
Take a lot of pictures of the bilges and machinery, the forum has quite a few members who own or have built, sailed or surveyed steel hulled yachts and are very knowledgeable on this subject. Pay close attention to the join between the aluminium structure and the steel hull.

Thank you so much. I’m glad to be here… I will do that, also I need to check papers of construction permit and/or drawings what ever İ can find.

For inner side İ can’t be sure of that because of covers and other elements etc. But from outside I’m going to check join between the aluminium structure and the steel hull.

After those photos which I’m going to take , I think İ need to open another thread with one of good subject name.

Thanks a lot again because of your good advices.

Re: Steel Motoryatch Opinion

The OP should start reading on Kasten's website about metal boats, Articles on Yacht Design and Boat Building

The preparation and painting of the metal is critical especially with steel and with the interior steel hull.

The interesting question to ask is how the AL superstructure is connected to the steel hull? That will be critical since AL and steel do not work well together and must be kept apart. One construction method is to use explosively formed material which has AL on one side and steel on the other. This is used to connect an AL superstructure to a steel hull.

Later,
Dan

Re: Steel Motoryatch Opinion

I wonder if there are different safety requirements if you are using the boat commercially and if you have more than a certain number of passengers? If there are, you may want to look at the boat with these requirements in mind.

Definitely yeap. There are planty regulations and requirements if you want to carry out commerically usage.

The first important rules, the tickness of the steel. As per regulations,if the boat over 15yo they can give permission if the steel did not loose from tickness more then %30
