Of course not. But we've lived aboard over 30 yrs. now, and there are some luxuries I like: my down pillow; glass glasses, and reasonable eating ware, and Jim gets real coffee, too, not instant. Because those things matter to us, we do what we need to do to minimize breakage. Since 1990, we have broken about 12 wine glasses--all by guests, as it happens. Very little breakage, all told.
We have used all plastic, and got away from it pretty fast. We have not had to cope with breakage below decks, except for the chimney that jumped out of the lamp. I agree that glass shards below are distressing, especially in a seaway, it is definitely something to avoid.
I think that if you are happy with plastic, that is certainly one way to cope with the potential problems posed by breakable stuff. I'm cool with that. We have some
stainless steel wine glasses we take ashore, and I'd still rather drink out of glass, but I don't like carting it around.
It is all very individual, and hamburking is right, and so is Simi60. This is another "to each his own" sort of thing.
