Anyone had larger windows installed?

Our 43' Wellcraft has three small eyebrow style opening windows on each sides. The glass (Plexiglass?) on one is cracked and no replacement is available. We would like to install larger non-opening windows, about 1'x3', to let more light in the salon.

Anyone have experience with the installation of larger non-opening windows?

Ask in the trawler forum, a number have replaced windows there.

Re: Anyone had larger windows installed?

Putting in larger windows weakens the structure of the cabin top, and if the boat is used in the open ocean, therefore vulnerable to bashing in the side of the cabin top by a breaking wave. If it is always used only in sheltered waters and nice weather, it may not be a problem.

We had a flush deck boat that was very cavy below decks. What helped immensely was painting the overhead bright sparkling white. If paint works for you, I'd do it. It doesn't take much.

As to the cracked port hole "window". Surely a glass cutter could cut you a new one, or if it is acrylic, or lexan (polycarbonate) then a plastic shop.

I repeat, I don't want to believe that the glass part of your portholes cannot be changed...

Re: Anyone had larger windows installed?

I just googled your boat. You’re talking about the ports I think. There aren’t any other windows anywhere else.

I can see why you would probably want more of the natural light coming in.

I think the trick there is that they are on a concave surface. You’d need to make a flat frame (or heat bend the polycarbonate or plexiglass) to match the curve.

Definitely doable as you see all the modern boats have what you’re looking for. But a LOT of work.
