???, I thought this was about sail boats? Not carbon fiber boats built to beat a speed record around the world or a military tri,?

Even with a power boat what Stumble said applies. To get low consumption, you need a narrow efficient hull form, which eats into interior space.


Power tri's don't need to be as wide but lack of space combined with massive beams are the big limitation on large cruising tri's. If those don't bother you they are good. Many of the smaller ones address beam with folding systems but then you get into the debate if the folding systems are reliable enough for ocean crossing (I'll leave that alone other than to mention it).


I would have to give serious thought to how much beam you could remove from a power tri before stability becomes an issue as the typical failure modes would be different.

Kurt Hughes had/has a power tri designed for efficient fuel consumption - believe it was designed as a home boat for extended kayaking.

The major issue I see with a long range cruising power tri is the weight. Not the hull weight but the fuel weight. To cross an ocean, even with a very efficient diesel, on a 40' trimaran would probably require 500-1,000 gallons of fuel. That's a huge percentage of a 40' trimarans load carrying capability. Sure you save some weight by removing the sailing hardware, but some of the savings is going to have to be in a larger engine.

It's probably doable and retain some living space, but I doubt the numbers would work out in your favor.
