What Would You Buy, for...

All the threads about hunters/ mass production boats vs. hi end boats got me wondering-
What would you buy if you had the budget of:
$25,000
$100,000
$250,000
1 million dollars

If you choose to answer this thread, please please try to elaborate on your pick for each price point.

Some starting assumptions:
1. it has to be a boat for a long and safe offshore cruise.
2. it has to support at least a couple with guests.
3. it has to be able to store a dinghy

With the possible exception of a few off-color jokes, Every word ever written on this forum is an answer to your question, in part.

If you would like to excite some debate, you would be more successful with a much more focused question. Try one of these:

When is a schooner more desireable than a sloop? If all the fun places to go are surrounded by shallow water, why would anyone want a ten foot keel? What features make a boat easy to keep clean? What should be done about all those abandoned derelict boats half sunk in backwater areas? What part of the good old days were truly bad?

Hi Sandy

I think its a fair question, being a young couple with a little budget on their hand and big dreams (like many on this forum), knowledgeable answers would be most helpful.

My aim is to get the wisdom of the crowds, and its also fun to see what people are going for for different budgets.

However, I think your moderation has just killed most of the possible answers...

I think Sandy is right. This general question has been beaten to death.

For more than $1 million vis a vie $2.5 million I would buy an Oyster.
For $1m I would buy a second hand Oyster

For less money I would buy the biggest Beneteau with all options, or equivilant production boat.

For $25,000 I would stay at home and work till I had more money. <---Oh howl me down.... But I refuse to care.

We would buy Joli again but if the budget permitted we would opt for a big Oyster like Mark and Nick.

Joli close reaching at 12~13, Mrs Joli at the wheel.

Absolutely...I had the opportunity to spend some significant time aboard "Elysuim" at the Annapolis Sailboat Show a year or so ago. Talked with Dave Cherubini at length about the boat. Being in the upper price range that it is, this is a fairly custom boat. I would make custom modifications to suit my thoughts of livability. For example, I would have a double queen berth in the aft section of the boat and the nav station off to one side rather than two single berths. The salon area was quite comfortable as was the cockpit. Cockpit coaming were of sufficient height and angle that made it quite comfortable.

This is without a doubt my dream boat...however I don't anticipate winning the lottery anytime soon.

Before I start would agree that this subject has not only been beaten to death, it's probably the reason for CF.com

So if any newer readers want to find opinions on the "best" boat then doing a Search will be worthwhile, everything in their from "How big can I singlehand?" to "How small a boat can I use to round cape Horn with a crew of 12 one legged dwarves. and a transexual Giraffe" (well, there is now ).

$25k? - £18K. I'd go for a Halycon 27. and refit her solid but very basic. My "luxury" would be a cockpit tent. Depending on the deal and my intended use I might even go for one with a terminal inboard and slap on an o/b. A good chance of having £5k left over if you buy right / the right deal is available / have some skills / ain't looking for a showroom finish.

A couple would need to be on good terms and capable of living close. and no fat birds

Guests? Usually berths for 4, even if a couple more ideal for storage. But they are only guests - don't want them to stay forever

Storing a dinghy? I would go for one of those new fangled inventions called.......an inflatable

Nice questions! Post them up somewhere please on a thread of their own.

My 2p ...

"If all the fun places to go are surrounded by shallow water, why would anyone want a ten foot keel"

Good question. I fancy a shallow keeled boat because

a) I want to be able to get in to all those fun places
b) I might be able to do exterior under-the-waterline work by parking the boat on its bilge keels in a tidal area
c) I'm told that bilge keels are well suited to the UK coastline and tidal range
d) I don't care about racing.

I'd love to hear what people say on your other points.
