Pride comes before a fall

After 3 years in the boatyard on a restoration project on my old 40' Wharram, the general concensus seemed to be I'd never finish and head south again.

So when the snows came early in November it looked like another year in the boat yard was in order. Colder but brighter weather meant I got my last jobs finished but the river had iced up blocking me from getting out into the Chesapeake.

A brief warm spell in the first week in December saw some melting and it was time to go.

A warm day and we kicked off from the dock, in a grand (AMF) gesture I took her on a quick tour of the marina, waving goodbyes.....with my last goodbyes said at the haul out dock, I heaved over the tillers over for a grand farewell down river to the Chesapeake.....

CLUNK

What was that?

In my grandstanding, I'd hauled her over a bit too sharpish and the dink hit one of the hulls......no big deal but by the time I got back on the tiller.....she'd started to slow down......to a halt......
shut off the engine and realised I'd run her aground on the spoil area (not watching where I was going)...tried reversing off...no go

Well, they say if you've never run aground then you've never been anywhere.......a great start.........

Fortunately my buddy, the yards rigger out in the marinas launch, saw my problem and had me off and away before too many saw......

Hi ho silver awaaaaay....Chesapeake and Florida here I come.......

Re: Pride comes before a fall

I notice you put a few miles behind you before you reported this.

;-)

Glad to hear you are 'out there'. Tell us where you are and what you've done, if you feel like it.

Watch out for ice and dirt.

Re: Pride comes before a fall

That was Dec '96......haven't had too many mishaps since then

Bumped bottom waiting for a bridge on ICW

Wintered over in Florida Keys, spring in the Bahamas then summer in Carolina sounds and southern Chesapeake.

Bermuda->Puerto Rico->Dominican Republic->Cuba->Yucatan following winter

then back to work.....

Another 3 extended cruises since New England - Eastern Canada......then 2 years on canals in France before heading out to Philippines in 2007....to build an 85' paraw......settled for 24' and home near the sea

oh yeah and new wife
