Pacific Rescue

Anybody know any more about this? The CBC had a piece tonight as well.

<<Adrift Canadian sailors rescued by U.S. ship

Three Canadians whose sailboat was caught in a violent storm in the Pacific Ocean have arrived safely in Honolulu after a night-time rescue by a American container ship.

The three, including a nine-year-old boy, were attempting to cross from Puerto Vallerto, Mexico, to Hawaii but were adrift with no power and their sails destroyed.

Directed by the U.S. Coast Guard, the freighter ship Horizon Reliance veered from its course and caught up with the 11-metre long sail boat around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Hawaiinewsnow.com identified the Canadians as Bradley James, his none-year-old son West, and his brother Mitchell.

At the time of the rescue, there were wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour and waves swelled to 6-metre heights.

The sailboat was floundering when the container ship arrived. The Horizon Reliance, which is the length of a football field, wrecked the smaller boat, as its crew plucked out the Canadians, Horizon spokesman James Storey said.

Hawaiinews.com said the three Canadians all had life jackets with strobe lights. Mitchell James was picked up first but it took nearly an hour before Bradley and his son were fished out of the water.

The Horizon Reliance sailed into Honolulu shortly before 4 a.m. Hawaii time (9 p.m. Eastern time).

“They’re safe and sound and in good spirits,” said Ali Nikhoo, a Horizon executive in Hawaii who met the Canadians aboard the ship.>>
