I was sorta thinking that too. They tried to kick me out of the yard I was in -- I'd threatened to sue over them dropping and damaging my boat, then trying to charge me for the repairs. I told them in no uncertain terms that I would not leave until it was safe. I already had an attorney, so they quickly backed down.

Re: Coast Guard Helping Sailboat In Distress at Ocean View In Norfolk, VA

Here are two more photos of the boat...shows the jib halyards tied off around the keel and prop. The boat was still there as of yesterday....so will see if the city removes the boat since they gave him three days to remove the vessel off the beach.

This is a very sad story but one that should have been prevented...lesson learned by all here.

So maybe the jib sheets were tied to the prop after the beaching and were not actually the cause of the engine problems. I guess we don't know yet.

Sunburned and sweaty, Calabrese was shoveling sand away from the boat’s hull Sunday in a desperate hope that he might be able to right and repair the vessel before the government does it for him and sends him a bill he could not pay.

Calabrese said he and his girlfriend, both retired military veterans, sold their homes and invested in their houseboat, which is based in St. Cloud, Fla., and named Maybe Tomorrow.
Wow, this is really not going to end well for them. Sold both homes, sunk all the money into the boat, can't afford a salvage, insurance won't pay out...

I guess there's an argument to made of if you can't afford to lose it, maybe you can't afford to own it. In the very least, it would've made more sense to buy a cheaper boat and put money into an "emergency kitty" for problems like this.

I'd hate to lose my boat(home), but at least it'd only set me back a couple years to replace her.

How much would a salvage for something like this run?

I assume at least a thousand or two dollars?

Quite a bit more. When I ran aground 30 yards off the ICW a simple tow would've cost me close to 600 for about 1-2 hours of work and that was a fairly simple halyard pull off a shoal. Luckily I had tow insurance.

Last salvage I read about online was when someone's prop shaft fell out and his boat started taking on heavy water. The tow boat helped pump out and tow the guy back in, but had to charge salvage(since the boat would've been lost without help). That was something like 3k, but his insurance company re-embursed him for it.

Stuck on shore like this I wouldn't at all be surprised to hear of a 10k(or more) price tag.

The really sad part is if the boat doesn't get saved quickly it can degrade. Seen a lot of threads where the owner can't afford salvage, he tries to do it himself cheaply and as the days go by the beach pretty much swallows up the craft making it that much harder of a job. Past a certain point, the boat becomes worth only scrap and gets cut up and towed away by land.

I have heard 20 to 30% of replacement value.

Yes, I think about 10 to 15K to get her off the beach and back to a yard.

The owners left their boat and left it when it was about to be hit by a storm. They waved goobye to it.

They're gonners.

If they are not insured then they will be saving up the vast majority of the boat cost again.

The only thing they have to negotiate with is the boat was already ashore before the salvagers took control.

If it was in the open sea the salvagers would have 90% of the value.

What is wrong with the keel, it looks really thin and small and bent?

First this is very sad for them and I wish them well. However any time EVERYONE else up and down the coast had their boat tucked away for this storm but them whos fault is it?

As for the value of the boat,,it is a Hunter 420 centercockpit about a 2000. So it will be worth the salvage as the value of the boat is about 130k

All it takes is money to buy a boat. Ya don't need to know a doggone thing. That's the sad part in my view. Darwin award material for sure.
