Help with 'Envelopes'

I have 2 postings, and both have a closed envelope with an arrow wrapped around it on the left side of the Title, or Subject. Am I supposed to open that? How do I do that?

An open envelope means there are posts in that thread you haven't read, yet.
The closed envelope means you've read them all.

The arrow means you, yourself, have posted in that thread.

The color of the envelope changes based on the number of posts made in the thread.
