Re: Advertising banner covering the recent thread topics

@LittleWing77:

Please get on a laptop or desk computer and use the Contact Us button in the blue stripe near the bottom of the page. It is the left-most of a number of buttons to click on. It will help everybody if we can learn what causes the problem for the phone access people.

Thank you, and my apologies the problem has endured so long.

Ann

Thanks

Re: Advertising banner covering the recent thread topics

During the last week or so, the long frustrating issue with the problematic expanding side banner ad covering the recent post content has not been occurring for me.

I am a Happy Cruiser.

I have not done anything new, the issue seems to have become resolved, at least for me.

Not for me. Still crappy crappy CRAP.

I've been experimenting with different browsers. (Thanks for the suggestion, Wottie and JC Reefer) Nothing.

Unbelievable. I'm assuming CF actually requires members and content to continue to exist? If members can't actually SEE the content because of ads obscuring everything... well, I don't see how that's going to work long-term.

Sheesh!

LW77, what operating system and browser(s) are you experimenting with (type / version)?

Thanks, Wottie. Still ongoing crap.

I have an Android phone with an updated version of Chrome. Tried Firefox for the past couple of weeks, which seemed to work initially, but it evolved to the same obscuration as Chrome.

I think you mentioned Safari at the outset, so that'll be next - when I have time.

These days, I'm more occupied with testing out my new repair skills than cruising the Forum. (Picture is a sideways view of the new exhaust elbow I installed on a Bukh yesterday!)

Re: Advertising banner covering the recent thread topics

Just want to report that the ads here are by far the worst of any sailing forum around, a big disincentive to use this forum. I use Google Chrome on Android, fully updated. This is a business decision from the website. I'd be happy to pay but no way if they're going to keep covering up content with ads

If you happen to be on cell it the worst data vampire site I’ve ever been in. The people in group are great. Who ever put these adds in has no clue what they are doing. It kicks people off the site to reboot because it interferes with the load with two adds.
In the middle of typing your key board suddenly has a screen to delete before you can continue. It’s rude at a childish level.

I tell ya, adblock is your friend. Makes the whole WWW, including C, a lot more pleasant.

There must be some adblocker available. If not, I'm sure another browser would work. As I say, it's not just about CF. It makes the whole WWW more palatable.

The other thing to keep in mind is that while CF licences its space to Google Ads, it doesn't have much control over the specific ads displayed. Last time I looked, clients like CF had some control over the content categories (like no porn, etc.), but I don't think they could define ad size.

The ads you see are being tailored to you based on your Google profile. In other words, these are the ads which are supposed to appeal to you. So another vital thing you should do is turn off everything Google (including Chrome), and use software like Ghostery to block all background trackers and snoopers.

It's unfortunate we have to do all this, but such is life in the new world order of surveillance capitalism.

I appreciate your help, and agree about using an adblock on pc. But the site owners are still the ones making the decision that I disagree with here. I'd be happy to donate I it got rid of intrusive that limited the usability of the forum. Sounds like some here are stating that they'll be stopping donating for the same reason.

Bad design is a pet peeve of mine. This site can and should make money, but no need to do it through bad monetization design and implementation.

It turned out it is possible to get rid of advertisements without ad blockers, by donating to the forum -and- changing settings correctly. Here are some examples from Safari on iPad I just captured:

You can become a 'Supporting Member' for about $15 a year (IIRC) by going to the "Account Upgrade" in your User CP (User Control Panel).

You can then limit the ads in the Edit Options of the User CP. See Screenshot - I don't know exactly what ads are removed.

You also have to disable the 3-column screen format.
