Can Boats Be Traded In?

Is it possible to trade in a boat during the buying process if the boat that is being bought is a broker boat? I have a Cruisers Yacht 3870 but we want to buy a Hunter 45 DS (2009 - 2012).

Basically you want the broker to buy your old boat.

No, that is not going to happen.

If I understand your question, the short answer is no. You can trade on a dealer owned used boat (I've done that twice), but not on a brokered boat as that is really privately owned. Not very likely a private owner wants your current boat.

Thank you! That's what I thought.

Sure but don't expect your trade in to be assigned much value by the other party.

Put yourself in their shoes.

No, but they may offer favorable terms to broker your boat. They may also be able to structure the sale/purchase so that you only pay sales tax on the difference.

Re: Can Boats Be Traded In?

I have seen trades happen between private owners, but of course the stars must align just right, so it is a low-probability event.
I do not know about brokers, I have never heard that happening, but I would assume it is theoretically possible, although it is hard for me to understand what would it be in there for the broker to make such a transaction happen. Boats are very different than cars, it is a relatively low volume business, and a broker does not own the used boats on her dock or yard or webpage, while a car dealer does own the used cars on her lot.

Pretty sure there is no legal way to do that in most US states...

Re: Can Boats Be Traded In?

I once purchased a yacht of a broker who had taken the yacht as payment instead of his commision.
If you are buying and selling through the same broker you might be able to negotiate the commision rate. I know a couple of brokers who do this.
Cheers

Take a look at the H49, same money more HP and other goodies, only negative is the 3 staterooms vs the 2 in some 45Ds

Re: Can Boats Be Traded In?

I just got an email from one of the big cat brokers advertising that they do take trade ins so it can be done. They have monos and power boats listed so I guess these were trades.

There was a comment on the possibility of a trade in lowering your sales tax hit and I believe this is SOP. I think I read that on the Fla DMV website and they said it has to happen in one transaction.

Dealers absolutely will take trade-ins on new boats or used ones that they have taken in trade (and thus own). The original question was can you trade in your current boat on one that is listed, but brokered, and thus not owned by the dealer. Completely different situation.
