Hi all,
We are looking to buy a used catamaran.
Considering our low budget of around €215 000, we are hoping beyond hope that we can find a 2012-2016 Lagoon 40 owners version.
We'd be prepared to buy , have already sold up everything we own so have cash in hand and ready to buy.
We've looked at many many brokerage sites but decided to check in here on the off chance that someone is looking to do a private deal.

I do not think, you will find one at this price point. You probably will have to add another 100.000 to the budget for a owners version, even a 4 cabin charter version would add up at least 50k to be realistic.

Of course, there may be some project boats around after the storms or hurricanes, that sell for this price, but then it may be a black hole for the refit.

Last month 2012 Lagoon 40 in Croatia and it was in great condition was sold for 230.000€.
I just got an offer from the dealer 285.000€ for a brand new one, ex vat after many discounts.

Both are ex-VAT, so add 40..55k to the offer.

There is no such thing Lagoon 40 model 2012.

Can anyone make the calculation, a brand new Lagoon is around 300.000 after discounts and boat depreciates %30 in first 5 years. Who is going to pay 280.000€ for a 5 year old boat?????

They just bought their Lagoon 400 for 220.000€. I know owners' trying to make a bubble in such a small market but come on get real.

If you are a non-EU citicen, you will be better off to get a vessel out of charter, because VAT is not paid and therefore cheaper for you to buy, however you may have to add costs and import duties according to your jurisdiction..

If you are in the EU, you either look for VAT paid, or have to calculate 20% on top of the price when buying. That is the reason why ex-charter look so cheap in contrast to private yacht sales. Also a 3 berth OW sells at a premium of 15..20% to a charter version.

Our was 2013 400S2 OW, fully equipped with A/C, watermaker, inverter, generator, 40hp engines, folding props and all available options factory installed and working as we boght it - including VAT - and paid 315k 1 year ago. We tried to get a cheaper one for 260k, but there was only the basic charter setup and 20% VAT on top, that would have added 45k on top, we tried to negotiate and made an offer, she was sold the next day, there was one 400S2 at the Seyshelles 4 cabin ex charter for 240k without VAT with some maintenance backlog, also a 421 in Croatia around 240k, ex-charter with one engine dead.

So not much depreciation.

A 2012 L400 is two models behind the current one, there is a higher depreciation of course, the 421 is even older and they sell around your budget if you find one. Check if there is still the hybrid inside or if she was reversed to diesel. A L410 or L380 may fit your budget, also keep in mind, there are additional costs looming for haul out, survey, marina fees, refit, antifouling etc. I would reserve a budget of 20..30% of the price for refit and repairs after purchase.

I know the Ocean Fox too, they have been very lucky to get her at this price point. She has a good set up, electric winches, but the basic weaker engines, fix props, no A/C, no generator, but with bow-spead and code zero and I think electric heads, it is a 400 before the face lift.

I am not saying you cannot find somebody to sell cheap, but then there may be issues with the boat, because owners and broker do know the market and there are more buyers than boats.

I am a non Eu citizen and I have an option to buy exc Vat by setting up a Delaware company or pay %1 tax in my country. The problem is usually the boats in charter are 4 cabins and rarely find a 3 cabin version.
This is our liveaboard dream if I can not find one in my budget, I will have to convince myself and my wife to live in a monohull

.. keep searching, check out older models or other brands, look for smaller cats. 380, 410, 421.

A 2016 40ft cat is probably out of reach.

The older the vessel is, the more you may have to refit very likely. OW are really hard to find for a good price and you got to be fast, they sell quickly.

Have a look at Leopards and FP, they are around at US charter businesses, so you not need to fly over so often.

My wife just likes Bali 4.0,Lucia and Lagoon 400.
The cheapest one I can find would be Lagoon in this group.
I don't insist on 2016 but at least it should be after 2010 or 2011.
We want to move before I am 45 have 2 more years to go

The Lucia was also on top of our list, but meanwhile we like the L400S2 more, not so fancy, but well built and just much more space. The new 40 is a step back, it is a face lift of the L39, much smaller, it is a 38.x ft and the beam is also narrower, smaller salon and cabins, the Lucia is also not a 40ft cat either (38.5ft).

The Baly was newer an option for us with the exposed helm.

If you consider a new boat, keep in mind, you have to cough up 10% upfront when you sign the contract
and then wait about 2 years for delivery. So would be perfect to order this year.

This also may explain why people look for pre-owned boats and pay high prices.
