Rudder indicator for Ray marine wheel drive autopilot

I purchased and replaced my old autopilot with the ray marine wheel drive autopilot. I am very satisfied. I also purchased the rudder indicator that I am now installing.

The directions say that the indicator can be installed upside down, just reverse the wires. I will have to do this due to space and the steering quadrant.

Now the question. In the directions it shows the indicator on the port side of the rudder. I need to put it on the starboard side. Is there anything I need to change when I hook it up electrically?

So I will mount upside down and on the starboard side. Anyone mount the rudder indicator on the port side?

Should be just fine. Either side does not matter.

Re: Rudder indicator for Ray marine wheel drive autopilot

I just thought I would post this here for anyone's future reference.

Octopus makes a Universal rudder reference transducer. This unit OC15SUK06 has a technical sheet that shows the connections and specs for a number of Auto Pilots feedback needs.

Basically the feedback unit is just a variable resistor (pot in short) with differing resistances based on AP. The spec shows what they are.

In a pinch you could go to radio shave and buy a like pot and duct tape it into the AP to get you home.

See here: http://octopusdrives.com/sites/defau...-OC15SUK06.pdf

And here it is attached:

Just connect the red and black wires so that the rudder indicator makes sense.

"radio shave" is long gone and so is Radio Shack . Burma Shave might still be around

Have you given it a reasonable test without the rudder indicator? you may not need it which would save a shed full of work.

Raymarine Wheelpilot will function perfectly fine WITHOUT a rudder reference.

pilots will work better with one. put it in if you can.

just hook it up way one. turn the wheel back and forth by hand. if it's backwards. swap the wires.

I found that my Evolution setup would weave a little side to side without a rudder reference. I had thought I'd sorted that, but came back after re-commisioning even with a mag dev of less then 7 degrees.

The simple fix was to use my old ctrek rudder position sensor. Now it tracks perfectly straight even in the lowest response mode, and the rudders can barely even be seen moving. So definitely worth adding it if possible.
