Inexperienced, yet able bodied looking for NE to Florida passage

Hello,
I'm looking to potentially relocate to the S.E. US/ Florida for the winter from the mountains of Colorado. Looking for a way to get some time/ experience sailing along the way, as well as over the winter in warmer climates. 50 y.o. male, 16 years as a professional auto. tech.- also I was a professional raft guide in Colorado for 10 years until last season. I grew up on Cape Cod, so I am fairly comfortable on the water.
Thanks in advance.
Bill

Welcome to the forum, Bill.

You have some in-demand skills. Go hang out around a DIY boat yard and get to know sailors who might share their assets in appreciation for yours.

In the general case, go where the boats are. Where else would you expect to find an opportunity to crew?

Best of luck with it. Do post about your progress, and offer advice when a thread needs your skills.

Re: Inexperienced, yet able bodied looking for NE to Florida passage

Greetings Bill: just caught your message indicating some interest in trading your skills for some sailing time. Your interest, my need. we are preparing to remove our engine Lehman SP90 from our Brewer 12.8 cutter rigged centerboard. Great cruising boat. we did a 4 yr rebuild before leaving the cheasapeake for florida where we had an accident in a marina on the florida-georgia border. we could use some help to remove the engine off the boat, clean up the engine room and replace it. we are comparing costs to rebuild her, a Beta (marinized Kubuta) or conversion to electric. The boat is in Port Charlotte and we currently live in Ft Myers while the boat is on the hard.
Let me know if any of this sounds interesting. Tom Jones s/v Blue Trust

See, I told you so!

For the record, the yard here in Carrabelle hires seasonal workers, and the season for them is about to start. I'm sure others do also.

Tim
I didn’t get the impression that he was looking for a job, just some sailing experience from somewhere on the East Coast to Florida for the winter.

Normally, i head for Florida ( ceiling mostly on the outside unless I get chased in by weather) about the end of September. This year though it looks like Finlandia will be in the boatyard for a while and if I make it at all it will be later.
Keep us posted on finding your ride south and if you don’t find anything by early November send me a PM - I may be ready by then.

Al, S/V Finlandia

miI'm leaving end of October from Norfolk, Va. Have someone says he's very interested in joining. If he flakes out, I'll let you know. Let me talk with him see if he minds a third person.

I’m departing Lewes DE for Stuart on or around 10/7. I currently have a full crew but will gladly keep this thread handy if some thing changes.
Best of luck!

Re: Inexperienced, yet able bodied looking for NE to Florida passage

Thanks for all the responses. I've been off the grid for a bit, so I'm just having a look now. I will be looking for work for the winter, but preferably just enough to keep from going bust while making the best of "winter", maybe 3-4 days a week. I'm just figuring out my travel window to the Northeast and will keep you all posted.
Anyone have info on Key Lime Sailng Club in Key Largo? I'm looking at a possible volunteer/ work trade situation for housing/ instruction. I'm thinking hat might be a good way to sniff around the area. Thanks again.
