Electronic Compass Placement

I have a Simrad AC42 compass and I would like to mount it about 1 foot from an AIS Class B transponder. Is this going to cause a problem with the compass performance.

There are other areas that are possible, but this is by far the most convenient.

Re: Electronic Compass Placement

The compass should be mounted as close as possible to the boat's center of pitch and roll, basically close to the waterline. And the installation manual states it should be at least two meters distant from sources of electromagnetic radiation. While I'm not sure what the transponder generates, one foot seems a bit close. So there are two reasons to put it elsewhere.

Re: Electronic Compass Placement

You should place as the instruction manual stipulates. Having said that I temporarily put my Raymarine fluxgate compass in the same area as you propose . Three years later I am still trying to come up with a good place for the compass but in the mean time it has taken us from Sydney Australia to Turkey. Try and see how it goes .
