Garmin gpsmap 172c - gps signal

I have opencpn v5.0 installed on a raspberry pi 3+.
Is it possible to get the gps signal from a garmin gpsmap 172c connected to a serial to usb hub (exsys USB to 4S Serial RS-232 ports) ?

Yes, connect NMEA out + (blue) to pin 2, NMEA in + (brown) to pin 3 and connect NMEA gnd (black) to pin 5.

Do I get the gps signal into opencpn by creating a new serial connection?

Yes. I just had a chance to do this with Win10 and a serial to USB adapter:

Yes, create the connection with baud rate 4800, 8 data, no parity, 1 stop bit. 4800:8,N,1

Use the NMEA debug window to see the NMEA messages. Using USB serial ports is not always simple because port numbers can change. OpenCPN should show you a list if available ports. The exact comm port number may require some trial and error which is why the NMEA debug window helps.
