You might try taking a blow dryer or small space heater and getting it warm enough to loosen up the old dried out grease. If it can turn, it will be easier to dis-assemble. Those are good old winches. ____Grant.

Re: seized winch on Angelman Ketch

If it's seized there's a good chance there is a broken pawl or gear. It's highly unusual for old grease to fully seize a winch.

Taking it apart is easy; start with the top ring and work your way down. The process is self evident as you work. Take pictures as you go which will be helpful with reassembly. Be careful lifting out drums and gears that pawl springs don't send parts over the side or into your scuppers, which are pawl and spring magnets, lol.

Finding parts for that old girl...that may well be more difficult.

Oh I hope not. I was thinking corrosion/rust the likely culprit

Russian007, those are bronze winches. Rust is not a likely culprit. Heat, like from a propane torch or from a heat gun, will be your friends for helping get things apart.

The pawl springs are tiny, and relatively fragile, and can fly away, if suddenly unsprung, so just be aware of that, and proceed with caution. We all dread the unexpected tink, splash!

Old bronze Barients are pretty well bulletproof. I doubt if there is anything seriously wrong inside it beyond grease jamming. If it turns out that parts are needed, Arco-Hutton in Australia has a decent supply. Not cheap, but better than a new winch!

If you need new pawls and springs, the Lewmar ones fit most Barient and Barlow winches. I've rebuilt several winches with them and they work well.

Cheers,

It's likely grease and salt buildup that has jammed it up. A lot of a thin oil like wd40 will melt the old grease slowly work the winch as you apply. Might take a bit of time. Then pull it apart wash all in thinners remove all grease in bearings etc. Inspect for ware replace anything really badly worn. The palls are generally easy enough to have made if you can't find a replacement off the shelf. A good file and some patience.

Re: seized winch on Angelman Ketch

another point: I suspect that you have similar winches that are not seized. I'd suggest that you disassemble one of them, just to see how they come apart. Tart it up, reassemble, and then, armed with a working knowledge of their innards, have at the frozen one. Immersing the whole thing in a tub of diesel or turps for a day or two might help loosen it up.

I bought a winch handle today and the winch does in fact turn. But it turns freely in both directs with no "click click" sound. Does this sound like broke pawls?

More likely just gummed up with grease and crud. Take it apart and it will become clear what the issues are.

Re: seized winch on Angelman Ketch

Agree with Jim and others that its most likely filled with crud and needs a good cleaning.

Before lifting off the drum, try to bag the winch or cut a hole in the bottom of a box to contain any springs/pawls that may fly out as you pull up the drum.

After you get it cleaned up, check to see if you need to replace any worn springs. New springs can be purchased independently of the whole Lewmar repair kit (pawls and springs) and makes a big difference in the performance of the winch.

We carry extra springs and pawls in the spares, just in we have an escapee while doing normal winch maintenance.

Re: seized winch on Angelman Ketch

And remember, when re assembling, only use thin oil on the pawls and springs, not grease. Grease on the bearing surfaces only.
