Re: 2 Dead, 7 Hurt in SD Sailboat Accident

Rebel heart, an excellent picture, worth a thousand words.

Pop-top up, no main boom, loose back stay, heinously overloaded and out of trim not registered in the state of California...

Re: 2 Dead, 7 Hurt in SD Sailboat Accident

It is indeed a M25. All of their ballast is in the lifting keel and were it not down all the way, there very well could be a stability problem but it is highly unusual that it would go completely...

Re: 2 Dead, 7 Hurt in SD Sailboat Accident

Still making the gross assumption that this was an M26. For those new to the water beware, the M26 is an enormous compromise. It neither sails nor motors especially well.

Re: 2 Dead, 7 Hurt in SD Sailboat Accident

"-OPERATE WHERE WATER IS WARM AND RESCUE IS LIKELY."

These boats are filled with positive floatation in the form of foam and if the tanks were empty there should...

Re: 2 Dead, 7 Hurt in SD Sailboat Accident

"SPECIAL SAFETY INFORMATION 26M
THE WATER BALLAST TANK SHOULD BE FULL WHEN EITHER POWERING OR SAILING.

IF THE BALLAST TANK IS NOT COMPLETELY FULL, THE BOAT IS NOT SELF RIGHTING. (IF YOU CHOOSE...

Re: 2 Dead, 7 Hurt in SD Sailboat Accident

My sincere condolences go out to the effected family. Here is a special warning issued for the M26 if indeed this was one: Macgregor 26M sailboat - Safety (https://www.boats4sail.info/safetym.html)

Re: 2 Dead, 7 Hurt in SD Sailboat Accident

Pretty certain you nailed it with the MacGregor 26 with empty ballast tanks assessment,
Dockhead. Put 10 people on one side and the outcome is never good.

Re: 2 Dead, 7 Hurt in SD Sailboat Accident

Reports vary on the size of the vessel from 25' to 36'. My guess is that it is a 25 footer with a retractable keel that was never extended.
