The keel bolts on a steel hull will be subjected to a huge "cutting effect" when the heavy boat grounds hard. Much less or almost none on a GRP boat where the material to what the bolts are bolted is...

Probably there is another way to look at it: the load on the keel on case of a collision will have to do with the mass of the boat. A steel boat is proportionally heavier than a GRP boat so the mass...

Yes not all boats being them Steel or fiberglass are built alike but the fact is that Vand de Stadt steel boat, designed and built in Holland lost the keel and the hull don't show signs of the boat...

I guess he is talking about the 11 welded fin failures mentioned on the article and assuming a welded fin can only be welded to a steel or aluminum boat. Can they be welded on a fiberglass boat?

Some, even racing, had the good fortune to be survive the loss of a keel and even be sailed thousands of miles without it to a safe port but that seems to be an exclusive ability of very beamy boats...

We don't know if the keel loss was the cause of the accident. The keel may have been lost with the boat banging on rocks however it is very strange that if that was the case the ruder to be in one...
