Re: Bestevaer 49ST

A nice wooden door. I hope it is really well varnished to protect from all that humidity.

Why two showers heads - redundancy?

A seated shower is nice when under way, but a stand up one is...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Nice looking workmanship again.

Are you going to insulate this area or leave it bare? If you insulate Anywhere with the frames being so deep you might be tempted to not insulate over the inside...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I use INavX too, but on my IPhone 7. It works well and I like the anchor positioning feature. If I set it up in flight mode and with the screen on minimum brightness it uses about a third of a...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I was talking to a motorboater recently and he had a remote control for both the throttles and the autopilot and the bowthrusters. His bowthrusters were also the proportional kind. This allowed him...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Understood. You don't need a wheel, or even a tiller for that matter. Those units I mentioned move the rudder shaft directly via a push rod, a lot like the Jefa one you showed earlier.

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

If you haven't picked your steering gearbox yet then check out the Lewmar Mamba WRG12. It is pretty well made I think.

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Wow, that's some time commitment. It's a job.

I'm sure you are wise to plan to not make changes. It is a known thing to avoid it in building construction and no doubt with boats too. Changes are...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Congratulations for pulling it off so far in a positive spirit. I suppose it will be the best part of four years from looking for the builder to completing the snagging. Quite an epic project to go...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

It's been great following this. I just looked back at the first post, it is now two years since you started the process. How have you felt about the time it took. Has it been frustrating or is it...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

That looks tricky. What method do they use to get the profiles right? Rack of the eye or CNC templates?

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

On the question of boat solar gain I have often wondered how much of a problem it is. I was struck by the huge difference in heat absorbtion and emmisivity of aluminium and fibreglass glider...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I knew I'd seen this information somewhere. A google search brought it up. The table at the bottom of this post says it all. You can see that there is an amazing difference between colours and...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I don't know about the clear coating, but how about anodising the hull? It should give better protection than bare aluminium. It is done with masts for that reason. Also, you can anodise in a huge...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

The plug is a great idea and without the mast join a real challenge too. I am sure the spar makers will find every reason why it can't be done! Actually I think the conduit part should be easy to...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I was surprised by the amount of water that comes in through my keel stepped mast when kept on the hard in through the hurricane season. Quite a few gallons. The hull to mast join is pretty...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I asked the builder of the Bestevaer when I spoke to him at a boat show some years ago about the effect of water ballast on his boats. From my hazy recollection the figure he quoted was up to 4...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I think shading comes first. Without that big windows make the interior too hot and with shading there will be negligible UV. Apparently glass blocks the most dangerous UVA rays and some of the...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I think Dockhead makes a good point. If you are in a cat saloon and sat by the window you have an awesome view, but because the saloon is often very wide the view out of the opposite window is not...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Agreed, can't always do it though.[/I]

I think all the advantages are there regardless of system voltage. I have a 24v system and struggled with voltage drop for the bowthruster with my lead...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

The awning will be fine so long as it extends a bit further towards the lifelines. There will be a lot of solar gain from the deckhouse windows and as you rightly say, blinds will not be enough. I...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I like the idea of balancing the boat. Often davits and dinghy are not in the original design as an integral element.

You could look also at mods later relatively easily. That is an advantage of...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I get it. Really I do. The issue is where one chooses to draw the line.

Now, as to washing machines. A good compromise of KISS I think. But why not push the boundary just a little further. A...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Another suggestion for your consideration:

Halyard tensioner/slider
These are made by Antal and Harken and maybe others I don't know about. They will allow all those ugly, bulky coils of rope to...

re: Bestevaer 49ST

I'll second that vote for jumper struts. Mine are good. Downside is less control of the mast curve and therefore of sail shape.

re: Bestevaer 49ST

I agree about gas being so much better to cook with than electric, but induction electric is different. It is as good as gas in my view and doesn't use anywhere near as much power as regular...
