Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

Run the A/C on the batteries, that will get you to 80% DOD.

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

Folivier, have you had a chance to pull down to 80% DOD? Just curious how much more boondocking you can do now vs the lead pack?

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

$706.50 per cell with bus bars and shipping is a real deal. Keep us posted as to delivery time, Balqon has an image problem there. You are going to be very pleased with the performance of these...

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

Well, maybe. If you don't mind using a couple 1000 of the 18650 cells that Tesla uses. If memory serves, the 300 mile Model S uses about 7000 cells.

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

folivier,

Of course if your inverter is only rated at 3000 watts, or your battery cable run is long or not 4/0 gauge, just run a single heater, it will be easier on the inverter and cable run. It...

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

For what I can gather from the above, your inverter/charger is capable of 100 amps charge current. I sure don't know why at 13.8 volts it returned to 100 amps, but I'm fairly certain that the resting...

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

What is the cell's resting voltages after you terminate charging early? If it was during the taper, you might have more in than you think. I'm charging at 14.6 volts and at the first sign of current...

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

I understand it was an A/B reading, but just for grins and giggles since you have noted these voltages under discharging conditions (warm), let all that battery mass go to ambient temps by letting it...

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

Is there any chance this drift could be temperature related? I know on my cells, they do give off some heat (not much, about 100* when ambient is 75*), and those small voltage sense wires for the...

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

Maine Sail, you sure have a good memory for all the older stuff. I had assumed since my 30 year old Trace would allow the user, through dip switches behind the Plexiglas panel, to set charge voltages...

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

OK, I get it now. My stand alone charger is set for 14.6 volts, so I would get the alarm too. For something that is on all the time when your plugged into a RV park (the charger side of the...

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

+1. And between you and I, we are going to put to rest the claim of 2000 cycles to 80% DOD as a believable cycle life.

I'm on cycle #246, 1754 to go.

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

Happy to hear things are working for you on your upgrade. What is the problem with your inverter/charger? Even my 30 year old Trace 2012 had dip switches for current and voltage on the charging side....

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

Maybe in my ignorance I'm looking at this in a too simplistic way, but it seems to me that the really technical aspects is for the ancillary systems for cell protection and not the swap out of lead...

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

David,

Maybe a good solution would be to take single steps one at a time and post for comments from the knowledgeable folks here.

On your choice to run smaller cells for better space usage...

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

I think this 4 volt reference is for LiPO, not LiFePO4. Nominal voltage for LiPO is 3.7 volts per cell, ours are 3.25 volts.

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

David,

I think you might be basing the size of your bank through your experience with lead acid performance. I come from the same camp before lithium, and trust me when I say that whatever size...

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

As a cruiser you shouldn't fear knowledge of your systems. Knowledge above just being an "appliance operator" could save your bacon while cruising.

Maybe you can put yourself in Maine...

Re: LiFePo4 for DUMMIES

This is a good read from my bible magazine "HomePower". I have read this magazine since their first issue in the days I was designing stand alone, off grid power for remote home sites.

Lithium-Ion...
