Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

I feel that there is a much higher percentage of ketches voyaging. I heard that there are about 10,000 yachts voyaging at any time. That is only a tiny percentage of total yachts. Of the remainder...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

The mizzen mast is 48 feet. It seems quite enough. Any more, and the helm would be impossible. Rudder is 6 feet X 2-1/2 feet.

mizzen 212 ft^2
main 555 ft^2
#1 - 135% 965 ft^2
AS spinnaker...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

Our boat is center cockpit. The mizzen is stepped a good 5 feet ahead of the rudder post - therefore Ketch. You could put the helm on the bow or the transom. The relationship that counts is the mast...

We have a huge area to help compensate for a massive displacement. In big wind we shorten the main or loose it. The cutter jib is tiny and the mizzen can also be let out part way. I can...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

In-mast manual furling at the Mizzen. This is really easy witha winch handle.

In mast electric at the main with manual over-ride. I can't tell you how easy this is.

ProFurl 52 at the...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

COSTS:

The Main rig is like a sloop. Add in the mizzen; mainsail and staysail. The rigging is realtively small. With a cutter rigged main you may NEVER change a sail.

I put up the sails...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

Exactly correct on the tack. If you read my post I noted that the tack is moved port or starboard according to wind point. There are two permanent tack lines run to deck cleats at the port and...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

My main is 80 feet and the mizzen is 48. No Triatic, Stays are 3/4 inch. Does that count?

We are out of the water as of Monday. Our last cruise was a cross-lake dash to Milwaukee. Its about 68...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

We are a Camper & Nicholson 58 Ketch so we are about your size. We find that the ketch rig does best when the winds fall aft of close hauled. If you are beating you will sail as a sloop. Having a...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

Look at our photos above. The staysail is not an "instead" sail. It, like a spinnaker, is a reaching & running sail. You may need to change the location of the tack from midship to windward if the...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

We just returned from an extended weekend criuse to Milwaukee from Muskegon. We topped out at 11.4 Westbound (jib, cutter staysail, main mizzen staysail, mizzen) and 10.6 on the return (AS spinaker,...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

Agree with that. I'd add code zero hardware and roller furling spinnaker and possibly a longer sprit to enhance light air and down wind performance. If you are in-mast furling consider changing to...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

You either learn to fix it - as most of us do - or hire it done and you don't care. Our 58 Camper has a lot of powered do-dads (yup old guy) but the loads are so big and the sails so heavy that for...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

Lots of deals out there for way less than 1/2 million and on some nice vessels. They don't need to be slow either. Its mostly about water line.

We are 55,000 disp; 58 LOA; 45 LWL; 16 beam; 80 ft...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

its not "dead"

I love My ketch. Its way more easy to hoist a Mizzen staysail than a kite. We are 58 feet LOA. I can get 3/4 to 1.5 knots from the staysail in 5 minutes. The kite is massive and...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

i don't really see this as a problem. I drop the thing on the cabin top in front of the Bimini or drop it through the nearest hatch and re-hoist. No big deal - like - what else do you have to do? ...

Re: The death of the ketch?

Here are really instructive views on one of our shister-ships. I rig my tack on a pair of short lines to port & starboard cleats so I can control how far to weather the tack sets. The boom must be...

Re: The Death of the Ketch ?

The split rigs and ability to hoist extra material nearer to the water is diminshed by the extremely light modern construction. Add to this the push to simplify and reduce cost.
