Even if the test aint perfect, I suppose it narrows the odds a lot!

The point is 316# is Austenitic and the 394# isn't.
If you meant to say 304... all 300 series is called austenitic SS.

I seriously doubt if alot of fasteners use on boats in the past were 316 anyway. I could be wrong of course, but it seems the whole 316 discussion has started since the mid to late 90's. My guess is...

Actually they carry fully threaded and partially threaded: McMaster-Carr (https://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-cap-screws/=kfsh2x)

:thumb: yep, especially in shapes like flat bar etc , which normally have a final cold pass in manufacture. The littel bit of Moly in 316 has nothing to do with magetic. It's about grain oreintation...

:thumb:Yes, great point, dont use universally threaded bots that are threaded right up to the head for sure and avoid any threads in the enclosed area as much as possible.

18-8 stainless becomes magnetic from cold work... or if it's high on the iron limit it might to some extent also.

316L is low carbon formula, tighter...

I was assuming he's doing all chainplates (at least eight with maybe 5 bolts each?) Not sure..... In the end, Stainless makes sense. Probably last another 20+...

3/8 x 2.5 bronze Carriage bolts , about $3.20 each if you buy 50. (the price of bronze blows me away any more, what is the deal with copper prices?) Hex heads may be less.

316L would be best I think. However, where they go thru your hull they are not exposed to the air right? and being inside the wood they might be damp. Bronze might be nice..... Whats the size and...
