"My pole has a pin/socket at the mast connection. " Yea, the pin socket arrangement is real nice compared with just a loop on the mast....no banging and rattling...

Normally the larger diameter end would be at the mast. Watch your fingertips on those black pushbuttons! You will want a line to release the outboard fitting from the sail/sheet. Run this line along...
