Re: Bestevaer 49ST

^^ of course in non-tropical sailing you might desire some "solar gain".

We had light beige non skid - I thought it worked well across a wide range of latitudes. I don't remember it ever being too...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I find the work sequence interesting. It is different than I am used to. I have typically seen metal boats built from the backbone + ring frames and then bulkheads, and then skinned (deck and hull)...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

yea, we added treadmaster non-skid pads to our hard dodger top - we ended up standing up there more frequently than we had guessed.

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I do not see laser very often on aluminum thicker than about 4mm. And probably the thinnest plate on SL's boat will be 6mm (might have 5mm decks I guess), with some 8 and 12.

oh, geeze - you...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Before we built Hawk, I had a couple designers attempt the 'reverse window pilot house", exactly because as you say it is common in serious work boats. But I found all the attempts to be ugly.

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Just as a small detail, we used SS armored fuel hose from the day tank to the engine (I think it was https://www.summitracing.com/parts/spe-29410/overview/). May be overkill, but you don't want that...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Hawk's system was somewhat similar to this . . .and I will say that in practice our only real world failure mode was forgetting to pump up to the day tank once every 12 hrs, thus letting it run dry,...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

^^ the reason I went aluminum was not at all "lightness and impact resistance". The primary reason was how easy it is to build an entirely watertight can in metal, with everything welded in and no...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

^^

"one ply of woven Kevlar and then the carbon reinforcements"

It was exactly what is written there, one single ply of kevlar (for abrasion resistance - if i remember 150 g/sqm ply from the...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

BTW, regarding water ballast . . . . internal ballast tanks have significant trade-offs . . . . but I was talking last night to someone prepping for a pacific run and he was using (several) external...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

^^ did you actually read the laminate details? They used only one ply of Kevlar, just on the outside, for abrasion resistance, and the rest was carbon - pretty much exactly as I suggested.

It's...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

^^ nice if the chainplates are anodised, helps protect them from the stainless bushing, pins and toggles near them. You fabricate then anodise, then have to grind some of the anodising to weld them...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Anodizing will not work for two reasons - need huge bath, way too expensive; and if you scratch it, as you certainly will on top sides, no good way to repair it.

Kevlar is actually pretty crappy...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

The major difference(s) in construction cost between metal and glass is that glass boats require tooling (a Mold) be built, while metal ones do not. So it makes sense to make series boats in glass to...

I have tack welded, but can't truly say I know how to weld. We always hired guys when we had something significant and...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

yes, they 'work'. In fact I believe they are not 'popular' because they work so well that the various racing rules penalize them.

The only drawback I have seen to them is that they can restrict...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I have been convinced that a 'properly built' carbon mast is better (but yes, rather more expensive) in all regards than aluminum (note: I consulted to southern spars for a while, and was CEO of a...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I am assuming they are getting a carbon mast?

If so, the best of all worlds is a keel stepped one with a deck level plug/drain. That gives you the engineering advantages of the keel step (and I...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Good observation . . . . If it is keel stepped, they need to make sure there is a deck level dam and drains inside the mast. But in the worst case, it is 'only' (usually) fresh (rain) water, if the...

We were on a club cruise in company...
