Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
All right. I'm theorizing. You say you've actually done it. OK, I would defer to that. |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
Uninflated life rafts don't float. If it doesn't go off, it will sink. Perhaps you can haul it back on board to inflate it manually, but, in other than calm conditions, and a slow sinking... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
No one said a week or even a day in a life raft would be trivial! By all accounts, it is a horrendous experience. I have heard that on top of everything else (e.g. crowding), the motion is... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
Actually the odds of that are SIGNIFICANT. I am not aware of any single case of a crew that had to stay more than a week in a liferaft, in this century, when the crew had an EPIRB. But... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
I agree completely with all of the above comments about potential issues with life rafts. YES - YOU have to choose a good one, YES, you must not UNDER load it (this why I carry 2x four-man rafts,... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
I cruised for decades with nothing but a dinghy. But I did not kid myself about its being anything but a death-trap in anything above F7 or F8, and even that would require engine power, which... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
Very interesting conversation there. The maker of the Portland Pudgy makes all the arguments, but like the Morgan's Cloud folks, I don't really buy them. 1. Being able to sail or row is... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
Modern rafts are packed in vacuum bags and only need the service every three years. The labor (in the UK) is about $200 per raft. Total costs vary according to what has to be replaced. I have two... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
That actually looks like quite a nice dinghy. I might buy it for its dinghy qualities, but I would not buy it for its life boat qualities. That's because Callahan designed it for his own problem --... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
You wild azz guess is different from my wild azz guess. I'm not sure that it's right to call that a "disagreement". :) If the normal liferaft is not more resistant to capsize, than the pudgy,... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
You seem to be saying that it doesn't matter if the liferaft or lifeboat flips over, because you can right it. On the contrary, getting spilled into the water when your raft flips is a very good way... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
Being really sure that your rescue signalling works, need not be any rub. It just requires thought and planning, and some investment. With enough redundancy, you can reduce the risk of not being... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
Two great things about the Portland Pudgy are double duty as a dink, plus you can sail or row the thing if you need to. HOWEVER -- is it really resistant enough to capsize? The Pudgy folks claim... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
A .. You mean it's a "false dichotomy". Maybe. But what IS binary is being IN the water vs OUT of the water. Which makes an absolutely dramatic difference in you chances of your survival... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
You missed his point! :) He meant that however poor it is, being in a liferaft, and even if your chances of surviving were poor (they are not by the way), it would still be a hell of a lot better... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
That's a very good argument and a good comment. From the "pound" sign I'm guessing this poster is from the UK, almost the whole coast of which is above 50N, and some above 60N, and bordering the... |

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft
I never saw anyone with a small daysailer like yours with a liferaft. They're pretty heavy and I don't think it would even be practical to carry. Nor are you likely to ever be so far offshore that... |
