Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Thanks; very interesting. What transducer do you recommend using with the Zeus, which is also what I have?

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Yes -- soupy silt which collects near the mouths of streams.

In the archis up here, the bottom is strewn with boulders and there are huge depth variations. Watching the depth gauge you realize...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Yes! I've never anchored in "fjord-like environments", but up in the Swedish and Finnish archipelagos you have quite a lot of what you describe -- polished rock bottom which no anchor can hold in,...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Exactly corresponds to my experiences with soupy mud in UK waters.

You have to give it plenty of time to "soak in", or whatever -- maybe sink through the soup.

My 55kg Rocna did very badly in...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

So they are machined from billet? Nice . . . . . . . Very nice.

I guess an anchor doesn't NEED to be pretty. But who will object when it is? :D

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

That looks really nice! Far cry from the agricultural roughly water-cut plate shank of my old 55kg Rocna.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

I think I mentioned already, but will say again, that the Fortress shanks are very beautiful objects. They are not only cleverly designed as this post above shows, but they are beautifully made and...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

I think the reason is purely cost.

It is very cheap to make an anchor shank by just water-cutting out from a piece of steel plate. Many times cheaper than fabricating or forging a shank.

So...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Titanium is not so expensive, that it could not be used in anchors. It's almost 10x cheaper than tungsten.

Ti might be good in shanks. But I think forged steel in the right form (NOT flat plate)...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

I guess any anchor shank can be bent. But I guess the genuine CQR has the best shank I've ever seen. I suppose it must be even more expensive to make than the Spade's hollow one, which I suppose is...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

I never said everyone experienced these sleepless nights, so you're not contradicting me :flowers:.

If I had a dollar for every cruiser I've known who did experience those awful nights, though,...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

An anchor shank made from simple flat plate is hard to design, to be resistant to bending and yet not too heavy. A heavy shank unbalances the anchor. One thing I like a lot about Spades is that...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Amen!

To my knowledge, what Noelex has done is the first time ever, that a large volume of absolutely objective, absolutely real life data has been gathered in one place, on the setting behavior...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Cool! Thanks for sharing! An interesting approach.

This begs the question why this arrangement is not used more often. The geometry of getting the anchor back home is far better, than with a...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

Horses for courses. I wouldn't expect the Fortress to work at all in weeds. I would expect the Mantus also to be quite poor in weeds. My Rocna was poor in weeds, although I expect it was probably...

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

You can also use radar for this. That's what I do. Radar is extremely accurate for range.

Re: Photos of Anchors Setting

So I'm not the only one who does this :) I use the thruster more anchoring than docking.
