You want to keep a diesel from firing up, the solution is not a key. A better solution is a hidden shut-off valve somewhere in the fuel line where a prospective thief would never look.

It should be noted here that the key can be left in the ignition on my boat while the companionway hatch is securely locked. I wouldn't want make life easier for the type of thief who would come...
