I'm curious. If you have no headsail out, why tack? Why not simply bring the traveler to windward and sheet in the main?

We find ourselves in that situation more than I would like. We generally just reef and head up until the speed is down to 4-5 knots, which allows the boat to make progress without pounding. If it...
