Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Maybe one could say that narrow boats make a smaller bow wave, and therefore climbing on top of the hull length (hull speed determining) wave is easy.

Yes, a cruiser should bounce quickly back...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I did some rethinking on this. As far as I have understood, you will buy speed by making the LWL long enough. But you don't need all the interior space and load carrying capability that the planned...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Not really, I think a skeg resembles a skeg, and a fixed keel resembles a fixed keel. Evolution will show us which random mutations will survive. The tested good old designs are likely to survive.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

That's true, but all this comes from the long Nauticat 33 - 44 tradition. Nauticat's pilothouse range and traditional motorsailer range are however very different. Both lines have pilothouses...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Nauticat 515 looks to me like a boat that is intended for sailing. It is hard for me to see any "optimized for motoring" aspects there by just looking at it. "Heavy cruiser" and "sailboat" seem...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Hull appendices? Southerly 49 seems to have a lifting keel and no skeg. Nauticat 515 has a fixed fin keel and skeg. Nauticat 385 has a fixed fin keel and skeg. Nauticat 385 has less rake in the bow...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Ok, that makes sense, except that I'm still a bit confused about your definition of term "motor sailer". Wikipedia defines it quite well, as usual (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorsailer), but...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Nauticat 515 should maybe not be called a motor sailor since Nauticat makes also what they call traditional motorsailors (like Nauticat 441), and their hull shape is quite different form the hull...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Where do you see the key differences between the Berckemeyer and the Nauticat? I didn't quite understand what was good and what was bad on each side.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Having a pilothouse + low dodger on top of it is not much different from having a dodger of the same height. Of course in the second case you can fold the whole dodger away when needed, but in the...

You mean, for the benefit of the older seaworthy design and less fancy fashion?

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Aesthetics is a difficult topic to argue about since its all personal. Southerly looks sleeker, and Nauticat is a bit more robust. Being sleek may be good for aerodynamics, but I agree with Dockhead...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I think I understand how the righting moment and the weight of the boat do interact and will right the boat. I was just confused about the math representation of your formula, where high weight is...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Of course also righting moment above 75°-90°-95°-100° is important. It is nice to come also back after capsizing. 180° AVS is thus ideal. It can be arranged together with good 75°-100° stability /...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I believe Nauticat 385 has a 180° AVS. It must be the pilothouse that does it. Probably not a very rolling boat.

Maybe 170° AVS would be as good in practice. Maybe a strong righting moment at 95°...

Ask Nauticat to expand their range to 64 feet.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Maybe a half skeg rudder whose lower end is designed to break when the rudder hits something heavy. Maybe it is possible to do that also without any skeg at all.

If you will have a large...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

The OP expressed some interest in the doghouse of the Boreal (and the aluminium structure and few other things), not necessarily its hull format.

There are many hull designs as you say. I think...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

That sounds to me like the traditional cruiser style could be a good approach for the OP. The LWL need not be constant, so the best way to meet the OP requirements could be to just increase LWL and...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

My understanding is that the OP wants to solve the loading capacity and speed related requirements by ordering a boat with sufficient LWL. That means that he would put more emphasis (and his money)...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I think the whole concept of Teleport, and especially its small "pilothouse" concept, are wonderful.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Boat designers can calculate stability curves based on the hull shape of a boat. We could have other similar curves too, like a curve describing the behaviour of a boat when it hits a wave.

One...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Yes, there are many styles, some sleeker than others. A one person size doghouse could be the sleekest option for the OP. But he expressed also some interest in having a sizeable pilothouse that...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

I have a pilothouse and a wide (not very high) soft dodger on top of the pilothouse. The soft dodger is mostly on, so it could quite well be also hard. I don't usually lower it when going upwind...
