Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
This could be the case because I think the original Navico was a British company, and Simrad is/was Dutch. Mark |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
I just assumed it was the same, although the name could have been bought out and repurposed. Mark |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
Well, they are 30 years old and you have no idea of their history - lightning, humidity, etc. I don't see how a depth transducer could be sending speed data. Mark |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
Yes, Navico was a brand in the 80's and 90's. I had a Navico tiller pilot in the 80's and a wheel pilot in the 90's. They used to compete very well with Autohelm. Mark |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
Yes, that is my point. If you don't use your radar, then the fmcw units use less power. But to me, trumpeting this point of NOT using a product as an "advantage" is silly. And the purposeful... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
Isn't ARPA done in the MFD? Does the radome really do all of that computing and tracking? If so, how? Or radome has no connection to our instrumentation other than the MFD. If it is done in the... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
One other thing: I don't have a fmcw radar to make measurements on, so all I can do is compare actual pulse data with fmcw specs. It is quite possible that fmcw uses much less power in practice... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
One thing to take away from the above is how little power is used to operate a pulse radar. Navico takes HUGE liberties in their marketing by portraying pulse radars as using "kilowatts" of power,... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
OK, that was pretty easy to do. Setup: DRS4D connected directly through a NN3D MFD8 MFD on, radar stby: 2.64A MFD on, radar on: 3.18A @0.5nm, 3.46A @12nm MFD stby, radar stby: 2.00A |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
I didn't know that about the new mfd's. My 1A figure was the difference between standby and operation, so there is the magnetron heater to also add in. And I'm going completely by memory. I... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
The DRS4D does not require the external power supply - it is powered from the MFD. I can't access the measurements I made on ours (they are in another thread here, though), but I know they weren't... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
I don't have access to my data on my computer, but there was a thread here on just this, where people with both systems actually measured the power usage of the radars. If I remember correctly, it... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
Are you sure about the Navico? I don't think there is any inherent reason why it couldn't do this. Yes, I know about this ability in our Furuno. We just find it easier to simply turn it on every... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
We have been through the power thing on other threads. I don't have access to my computer that has the actual specs, but the power use difference between pulse and fmcw is almost nil in operation. ... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
I thought MARPA was considered a bug in Navico radars? At least one person here has listed it as such. Would it likewise be wrong and off-focus to discuss the technical nature behind your... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
Sorry, absolutely everything one can do to visible light can be done with any other frequency of EM. Lensing in all forms, forming coherent beams, etc. It is the basic physics behind photons. ... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
I guess it is different perceptions. I personally have not read any "rage" into anything that has been written, and pretty much all of the bugs that have been pointed out do actually exist - all... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
I know the term "light" is mostly used colloquially, but consider the "C" term in E=mc2. As for radio waves behaving differently than visible light, you differ from Einstein on this, so one of you... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
I'm sure you meant "radio waves aren't visible light"? I have no experience with the different type of antennas, but I know that in our Furuno dome is an antenna that is some section of a cone... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
Maybe I'm remembering it wrong, but I remember Tanglewood schooling Ben on radar beam width having very little to do with MARPA accuracy. He gave very good explanations as to why that is. ... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
Yes, I recently read that article and was shaking my head at the loads of "facts" that were being dumped in it. Ben was WAY off his rocker in that thread - very unusual for him. I think his problem... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
This is still true for Raymarine, but Navico uses standard micro-c connectors, and they only use the term "simnet" anymore to refer to connecting to older systems (similar to how Raymarine uses the... |

Re: Tired of Bugs in Navico Equipment
One of the issues with Triton certification is that they allow daisy-chaining, which is not allowed in N2K certification. Mark |
