Re: Are paper charts a dinosaur?

And, if the chartplotter "goes out"? Seems a rather unlikely scenario, to have a failure of your GPS input independent of the plotter, no?

I know, I know... there's always an iPhone, or something,...

Re: Are paper charts a dinosaur?

Re: Are paper charts a dinosaur?

Seems we're pretty much in complete agreement, I see nothing to quibble with in what you're saying...

However, the point I have repeatedly tried to make, is that the value of a paper chart in the...

Re: Are paper charts a dinosaur?

Well, we can assume the appropriate paper charts were being carried aboard VESTAS, as required by the Notice of the Race. But, by "relying on", are you inferring that they actually LOOKED AT them ?

Re: Are paper charts a dinosaur?

I'm a bit surprised you couldn't find the room, 3 Maptech chartkits will get down the coast from the Chesapeake, it's not like they're not gonna really take up all that much space...

Last summer...

Re: Are paper charts a dinosaur?

Well, in the event of the aforementioned worst cast hypothetical, I'd still rather not know where I am on the relevant paper chart spread out before me, than to not know where I am on a blank...

Re: Are paper charts a dinosaur?

I'm lucky, in that regard... When reading something like that, my eyes begin to glaze over, before my brain really starts hurting... ;-)

I suppose that's the way dinosaurs were wired, no?

Re: Are paper charts a dinosaur?

Ahhh, sorry about that... But are you sure you need to subscribe, instead of merely registering? Perhaps you do now, but it's been awhile since I first signed up there, I honestly don't recall...

Re: Are paper charts a dinosaur?

Sorry, I should have qualified that, to refer to a smartphone that relies upon cell coverage to navigate...

The case I was attempting to make was in response to your own hypothetical citation...

Re: Are paper charts a dinosaur?

Still, even with my rudimentary navigational skills, if I were ever to lose all power and electronic positioning capability while sailing anywhere, I'd much rather find myself WITH paper charts...

Re: Are paper charts a dinosaur?

Re: Are paper charts a dinosaur?

Maybe... Or, maybe not...

I was glad to have a 'Real Chart' to fill in the blanks on this virtual chart up in Labrador last summer... ;-)
