Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

The 'dog leg' Mark refers to looks fairly apparent, to my eye... Here are the tracks of the fleet at the time of the grounding, VESTAS is the blue boat...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Well, I don't know how any of us can know that with such apparent certainty - at least at this point in time...

No disagreement there...

To believe otherwise, you'd have to think it...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Not really... all things being equal, I still prefer the larger full size of paper, especially for initial planning, or 'exploring' over the small screen that often requires much panning and...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Of course it should… Just like the light blue blob that showed up on the navigator's computer aboard TEAM VESTAS WIND in the Indian Ocean should have been enough of a "hint" to have a closer look,...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Oh, well… Perhaps one of these years I'll learn to simply keep my mouth shut, but I wouldn't count on that… :-))

You're absolutely correct, I am nowhere near as familiar with these sorts of...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Here's where I disagree... Not saying you're 'Wrong' about this, each of us is 'wired' differently, of course. But for me, there is a big limitation imposed upon ECS for 'Big Picture'/Initial...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

On old, 'outdated' charts, perhaps? :-)

I just don't see paper charts 'disappearing' any time soon... I think most Hydrographic Services around the world will retain the ability to have...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Good point, hadn't thought of it that way... Pretty basic 'plotter', for sure... :-)

Pretty unlikely, I'd say... Much simpler to stay outside, or on the extreme edge of, a busy shipping...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

"Eventually unaffordable"? Hell, based on my wallet's thickness, they already are... :-)

Still, some of us dinosaurs continue to purchase things we can't really afford. Pretty much the essence...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

To that, I would say "Not necessarily"... :-)

I still believe paper can often have great value, particularly for initial route planning. The recent grounding of TEAM VESTAS WIND would seem to me...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Not to mention, bulky, and heavy, as well...

For my cruise last summer in Atlantic Canada, my charts folded into quarter formed a stack just under a foot in height, weighing a total of about 70...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

We'll just have to agree to disagree on this, but I believe that on occasion, reliance upon a chartplotter has very likely Emboldened a skipper to attempt something he otherwise would not have tried...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Well, one thing I'm certainly not very good at, is choosing charts/software that may not yet exist... ;-)

My first visit to Newfoundland pictured above was in 2008, if memory serves. I was using...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

OK you're old fashioned!

If you're out of sight of land or even out of sight of landmarks, you don't really know where you are in the "real world".[/QUOTE]

It appears you're missed my point......

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Indeed... I'll bet Will Oxley experienced more than just a touch of deja-vu that night on ALVIMEDICA, standing by in the aftermath of the TEAM VESTAS WIND grounding...

How've you been, Frank? ...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Well, there's the rub...

Call me old-fashioned, but I'd prefer to know where I am in the Real World...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Uhhh, not necessarily... At least not in a place like Labrador... :-)

I ran into a couple of these sort of anomalies/voids in my C-Map coverage last summer, where charts had been 'stitched'...
