Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

I have but as I mentioned there's a considerable amount of air trapped in the tubes no matter how much they evacuate not to mention the various bags and containers in a SOLAS raft and the folds of...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

You need to reread I did not say "underinflated" or partially inflated, I'm saying right as it comes from canister.

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

You should put one in the water uninflated and try to sink it, I'll watch. As I've actually done this in a twelve to fifteen foot sea, wearing a survival suit and 40F water at night I can say it's...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

A raft can be inflated manually even in the water, and I'd suggest spending a day at sea in one before making a week seem trivial.

I'm reluctant to comment and appear to be dictating, please use whatever you wish and I'll do likewise.

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

We lifted ours with a crane by bridles and rigged a sea painter to bring it alongside. An able boat but not something I'd want to be adrift on in the Bering Sea.

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

No one has advocated acquiring inadequate or inappropriate equipment for a planned voyage or area of operation, quite the opposite.

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

On the factory trawler I operated we carried liferafts as required by the USCG, we also carried a rescue boat, a sixteen foot RIB with a forty horse outboard. Different tools for different purposes.

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

I did not intend to initiate a debate, you should go to sea in what you chose.

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

Hence the need for a liferaft, and not a simple open inshore raft but a fully enclosed and ballasted one. I've unfortunately seen a number of persons die at sea, one died when he jumped from a...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

I worked in those conditions for years and while I know the vast majority of people will never be in such conditions they do exist, and sometimes when you don't expect them.

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

If possible rafts are properly deployed while tethered to the sinking/burning vessel to address the blowing away issue. As with anything planning, practice and knowledge help mitigate random negative...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

I've been in rafts in over forty knots of wind where the raft was rolled across the surface until it's ballast chambers filled. If that had been a dinghy you might have had time to say a brief...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

In practice the terms are used together and/or separately to address the same thing. Exposure suits are similar to or the same as what we call "deck suits" in commercial fishing. There are also...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

Survival suits are great and much better than any life vest but chances of survival in a survival suit are increased four fold when you are also in a raft. Your chances increase much more with a...

Re: Do I Need A Life Raft

I fished commercially for forty years in the North Atlantic and the Bering Sea and I have a 4 man SOLAS A liferaft, EPIRB, SART and survival suits on my boat.
