Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

quote name="Polux" post=2136458]Being the RM faster downwind the waves will slap the boat with much less force (if at all). In fact the boat will be sailing at almost wave speed doing long surfs. I...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Good idea. Though won't address a wave slapping open transom and soaking helms person.

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Sure, polux- the usual. All you mention (or quote) is what the marketing folks say. And yes, the yachting press tends to help promote and market brands in case you weren't following the revenue...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Neat concept, like what they did with the forward berth.

Not what I would call a voyage cruiser given the cockpit- more a race boat cockpit. Pretty exposed helm station. Nowhere to sit to steer...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Great post. Agree completely- the use of the term "state of the art" by Polux is so misleading and reflects his opinion, not the actual facts of boat design. And other than lightness, that which...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Some that you have listed certainly are cruisers. Many of the ones you have listed as fast voyage boats have wide open transoms which preclude a lot of storage in lazarettes, or any chance of dinghy...

Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Agree. And I think for the few production builders that are actually turning out light, high tech boats- that is a great niche. A planing fast cruiser seems like a really great way to cruise, but...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

To clarify, the JPK seems like a fun little daysailor, protected water cruiser. Like every race oriented boat of course she can go further. I don't see a lot of payload capacity. I imagine it's very...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Nice try. Either you're joking or really stupid. That video is not of a cruising boat. Are you kidding me? Look at the helm station with the poor soaked skipper sitting on the coaming next to the...

Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

[QUOTE=Polux;2124684]"Not any intention to slag your boat but it is not comparable in performance with any of those two, light wind or otherwise. "

And how exactly do you know that? You ever sail...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

No need to slag my boat polux. I will extend you same courtesy.

Anyway, you show race boats flying chutes.

When I fly my chute on a broad reach I can sail wind speed and greater in light...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Yawn. Same posts over and over with pictures of beamy boats in strong wind. Show me a picture of a beamy cruising boat sailing well in light air.

Also, if you recall, winged keels were considered...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

And to further discussion, boats with finite, limited horsepower like rowing shells, canoes and kayaks still are long and narrow hulls.
Long and narrow is still the most easily driven hull form,...

Re: Pilothouse Variations -- Boreal

Yes, narrower beam boats often can do better with light or moderate air and non surfing conditions due to reduced wetted surface and more easily driven hull form.

Broad brush strokes of course......
