Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Wow. Absolutely gorgeous. Worth every penny and every hour you guys poured into the design and details.

Speaking of which, if a hypothetical customer approached KM and simply said "I want a boat...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I wonder if KM will make these features "standard" to thier line?

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I have been custom re-building my boat now for about 18 years. Pretty much EVERYTHING as been ripped out and radically redesigned to match the way that I use the boat. Nice way to get just what I...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Jim:

I have only 6 months of use with my new aluminum chain locker, and so far - no problems.

It is certainly not very pretty, and I expect thef aluminum to SLOWLY develop some pitting.

I...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I sure wish I could keep a phone/tablet anchor alarm next to my bunk, but the GPS signal will not penetrate the aluminum decks and house top. Is there a trick that I am missing?

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Noelex (and SWL), I applaud your dedication to keeping your boat simple. It is the rare event that a new, custom 49'er is commissioned without the usual level of system complexity.

While I have...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

My Photo bucket stuff is doing the same thing has SWL's. Bummer.

I actually gave up on Photo bucket some time ago as their site was having numerous technical difficulties.

I switched to Imgur....

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I also. concur.

The aluminum around my deisel furnace chimney does not get hot at all. It does, however get stained. A moat would probably solve that.

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

No doubt about that!

One more question. Those formers/jigs that the hull was constructed on (and still attached to the shop floor), were they custom made and used for your boat only? Or are all...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Seaworthy, Do you know the weight of the hull in its current state?

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Olaf, Panope's main tanks are above the engine with a head height of about 1 foot. The engine will not bleed unless I pump the lever. Engine is a Yanmar 3JH3E.

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

avb3, The hull scantlings for this Bestevear are more than twice that of my boat (granted, it is a bigger boat) and I have had no hull cracking (except where someone botched the old motor mounts by...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Poiu, I've been mucking around with Panope for 40 years. She has always had a black hull and the interior has never been hot. Even when on the hard (no water cooling). The boat did spend a...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

SWL, I used a stock PPG color (RT - 1503, Grey) on Panope's decks. This color does not reflect light in a noticeable amount (no sunglasses needed) and has not heated to more than slightly warm to...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Me too.

Also, I would have expected notches to be present in the bulkheads to accomodate longitudinal framing. Will there be longitudinal framing? Perhaps the notches will be omitted entirely...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Ben, on Panope I just prepped for normal painting by sandblasting. Used two coats of Epoxy primer that I had mixed the same color as the topcoat. I used the "sprinkled glass beads" technique on...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

This is probably not applicable to the Bestevaer (because it as a "normal" mast) but here is what I came up with to solve the mast penetration problem.

Two piece mast with scarf joint connection...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I think the rationale for using a portable fridge is sound (I use an engel). However, you might consider having a traditional, built in, top-loading icebox as well.

If (when) you sell this new...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Thanks Noelex,

I highly recommend the metal working skills for all boaters. However, this will create a problem for you as you will need to tow a vast, solar-panel covered barge to power the...

Noelex, I removed (and welded shut) Panope's dorades for the the same reasons you gave. I have not missed them. Boat stayed dry last winter spending 5 months on the hard.

I made no attempt to...
