Re: Bestevaer 49ST

What a fantastic seagoing galley. That space will be perfect to use in a nasty sea. It is very similar to the British Steel Challenge 67 galleys. I love the handrail around it.

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

The 12mm plate for the coaming sounds like a good plan, I guess it means you need minimal backing plates for the winches and it makes it very easy to add or shift hardware. It would also distribute...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Looks fantastic, and thats is one seriously strong deck. I like how you have kept the area forward of the mast clear, is that so you can strap a dinghy down over it?

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Opps my memory was wrong, sorry, hat tip to Uncivilised for jogging my memory on a different thread.

Stiffness is actually thickness^3 so doubling the thickness from 4mm to 8mm gives 8 times the...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Re header tanks.. I found out the other day from fellow CFer 'Shakey Doug' (a very knowledgable engineer) on here that some injector pumps prefer a reasonble head of pressure to work at optimum...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

That boat is a tank! I would have absolutely no worries about hull flex or cracking. Looked after she could still be sound and oceanworthy in 100 years or more.

It is however a valid concern...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Thank you for these photo's SW. It shows the system nicely. It looks like the longitudinals are actually cut to shape from plate rather than extruded flatbar forced to bend around the hull?

A very...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Many of them notch out the bulkhead for the longitudinals, then weld the slots up. Others butt the longs to the bulkhead then add gussets. K&M have a neat looking system that is slightly different...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

I second Panope.. every picture! But the details I would most love to see are the way they connect the longitudinals to the watertight bulkheads. It seems like a very clever solution from what I have...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

That is a fantastic photo of Besteavear 2's cockpit. I love the simple efficiency of it all. Its nice to know there is no real issues with having a mix of bare aluminium and paint on deck. I had...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Yeah, I often ended up on the top of dodgers in rough water, but mostly to deal with traditional slab reefed mains, untangling reefing lines, zipping up boombags and adjusting leechcords. Snowpetrels...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Thanks SWL, looks good, Any reason you left the pilothouse top without any nonskid?

Is it going to be bare aluminium between the non skid paint. Or is the whole deck and cabin going to be painted...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Thats a pretty solid little hull Steve, 5mm aluminum is amazingly tough, I saw the damage to an aluminium yacht that got caught in heavy pack ice for a few days. She was an old BOC boat, 60 foot, 4mm...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Thats awesome scantlings for a 17 tonne yacht. Absolutely bulletproof!

The boat I ran in antarctica was substantially built from 4mm plate on about 16 tonnes loaded displacement.

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Nice. Out of curiosity what sort of thickness is that bulkhead? Certainly has some very impressive framing.

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Thanks SWL, good to get more info on the logic behind your system.

I didn't realise the polishing system draws from a much lower point than the fuel supply. The logic makes a lot of sense now. ...

Re: Bestevaer 49ST

Seems to me if you tee'd the header tank overflow into the polishing system return, and used separate valves rather than the three way valve, you could use the polishing system as a completely...
