Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Regarding setting the valve lash - we are all assuming the cam followers are actually following the cam lobes and for 99.99999% of the time, this is a reasonable assumption. With this engine, we...

Don't beat yourself up; it is a learning curve and we all started somewhere.

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

This is turning into one of CF's better engine mysteries - where is Agatha Christie or Sherlock when you need them. I keep thinking I must have missed some early clue but everytime I re-read the...

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

All good questions. Obviously the best option is to measure the compression but I'm assuming JustinT does not have access to a compression gauge or even a ready source to buy one.

If it was me, I...

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Well you are on the spot and are in the best place to know how it sounds. My previous analysis has been based on what I understood the engine has operated a few times for some seconds after the key...

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Yes, that does make it a little more difficult. What sort of fitting is used at the inlet side of the lift pump (see attachment)? The manual I have suggests it is a banjo fitting with a hose nipple....

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

OK, a couple of days back, the engine appeared to run OK for a some seconds after the key was turned off. Or have I missed something in this video?

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Providing there is some gap, it won't stop the engine from running (at no load) unless the gap was so big that the valve didn't move.

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Once again - back to basics!

The engine does fire and run for a short period - intermittently.

So from the videos and data to date, the engine is getting ample air.

That only leaves...

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Earlier the engine was getting fuel for a short while, now the engine is not getting fuel at all - simple as that.
It's late here so maybe more tomorrow if no else gets it sorted in the meantime.

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Yes, you probably should but before that, please post a picture of the existing oil.

What colour is the oil on the dipstick?

a. almost clear (like new)
b. honey coloured
c. black
d. grey...

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

OK, back to basics.

On the positive side - you know a shipload more about the engine than you did last year. You have overcome a lack of mechanical knowledge by asking questions and are now...

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Regarding copper washers for banjo fitting - if they look physically OK, then they only need to be annealed (i.e. made soft again) before refitting.

To anneal (soften), heat washer until they are...

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Another guess

Some time long ago in the past when the engine was shut down, the exhaust valve in the dud position was fully open which means the cam follower was fully raised. It sat this...

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

My suggestion -

You have 3 valves/pushrod/cam followers working correctly and one that doesn't. My guess is the one that doesn't was also the one didn't work earlier (and had the bent pushrod).

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

FWIW, any half decent refrigeration tech, gas fitter and (some) plumbers could also make the pipe.

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Good news about the pushrod.

There is a critical zinc rod mounted in cooling jacket of the crankcase. It needs replacing regularly; refer to page O-9 of the service manual for details.

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

I never thought of using a reground meat cleaver but it will soon be part of my toolbox now :thumb:.

To be honest, in my limited DIY experience, using compression has never worked for me but...

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Good point about the wedge has to be thin. I overlooked that essential piece of advice. Thanks for highlighting it skipperpete.

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Something is missing from the YT link, it isn't active!

There is nothing tricky about removing a DV20 head. Assuming you have followed the steps in C7 of the manual, it probably only needs a good...

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

You might be extremely lucky and find the valve spring is broken and that might be able to be replaced in situ but I strongly suggest you follow Growley's advice and remove the head. Take it home and...

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

Yep, never going to start while that exhaust valve is stuck open!

I suppose you could try freeing it with a tap of the hammer but I think you will end up having to remove the head (at least).

Re: Engine seems to start but rolls to a stop

I've re-read all the posts - it seems clear to me that you have one cylinder working properly and one cylinder is not firing.

Last year you managed to get it to run for some minutes but never...
