Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Hells Bells RC, this is the interwebby and someone's wrong :danger:
It's gotta be sorted and there will be no resting until that happens; unless of course, the big servers melt down.

Meantime,...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Sounds like we are both going to be safe from this long term exposure thing

And there is no denying that the breadcrumb trail is often helpful. I like to think of it (CP/GPS) as a...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

But were you using a CP at the time?
I have run aground a couple of times too but it wasn't the CP or the GPS fault - 'cause they weren't invented then  Since using a GPS, I haven't ran...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

This it in a nutshell, this is what this thread is really all about. This is what I have been trying to say all along but either I'm not good at explaining it or other's aren't willing to consider...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

I'm not sure anyone has suggested this; for my part, I suggest chartplotters ALLOW people to do things that aren't wise (in a navigational sense) and that such unwise things would be more difficult...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Then I guess this thread is not about you, rather it is about those whose sole reliance on their chartplotter has got them into strife. They are clearly not as smart as you. The function of the...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

I think you are probably correct and certainly the electronic chart has many advantages but for safe navigation we must be aware of and remember it's limitations.

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Shorter post :)

Question for Mark (Colemj). As it seems that you don't agree with much of the criticism on this thread, what in your view are the limitations of GPS and the limitations of...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Ahh... that's different, drinking freebies (or sort of 'free' in your case) is very acceptable behaviour; welcome back to the inner circle. :thumb:

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Well, what an eye opener - not sure if I would trust you as navigator, I mean "Barcadi", really - what sort of sea dog are you

Officers (including the "pencils" and 'sparks" and so on)...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

I think we all agree that the root cause in all the quotes you posted is the navigator, not the tools he/she uses. However it is possible that the tools are contributing factors.

In the past (pre...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

It is rather easy to incorporate a "terrain" warning system and yes, it is only as accurate as the chart (terrain) data but that is the same data as the human navigator would use anyway. The aviation...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

To those who harp on about GPS is so accurate (to say a couple of metres), please don't forget they are only accurate to a particular datum.

Any one location on the earth's surface can have more...

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

Sorry for the thread drift
I never really did understand statistics but am I to understand that if half the crowd is above average intelligence, the average goes up?

Re: Another foundering how do chart plotters get it wrong

I'm sorry but the emphasised section of your post makes no logical sense a all.

If your claims are correct, then the electronic charts are also inherently inaccurate being that they are accurate...
