Re: New head-Raritan Elegance or Fresh Head?

Hi Peggie,
Yup, I do know the Fresh Head is manual. I thought that might have some advantages...perhaps quieter and easier to service...although I don't know that.

Any idea as to which head...

New head-Raritan Elegance or Fresh Head?

I'm thinking of replacing my electric head (Thetford Newport model). It works, but not great and is loud. The boat is set up for fresh water flush ONLY, as the through hull for sea water inflow was...

Re: Close quarters maneuvering with twin rudders?

Nicholson58, thanks for the encouragement. Given the stories I've heard about "credit card captains" I figure (hope) that I'm at least as competent as the average BVI charterer so I'm not too...

Re: Close quarters maneuvering with twin rudders?

LLizzard, sorry I should have been more explicit that I'm talking about a mono with a single engine. A cat, as you point out, would be no problem. I love maneuvering with twin engines.

Lots of...

BVI charter boat--newer/smaller or older/bigger

I'm planning on chartering for the first time this spring and am deciding between two different size monohulls.

--Moorings 38' that is 3-5 years old.
--BVI Charter 35' that is 1 year old.

Close quarters maneuvering with twin rudders?

How do you do slow-speed, close quarters maneuvering in a vessel that has twin rudders, a sail drive, and no bow thruster? (Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm curious.)

I'm looking at...

Re: Month 23 Expenses of Cruising and Living on the Boat

Thank you for sharing. This is great information to help me plan for when we cut the lines. Do you have a web site that gives more information regarding the boat you have, number of people, etc for...

Re: Question checking oil level in Yamaha outboard

Thank you, this is helpful but I’m still trying to understand why what I see doesn’t match p.20 of the manual, which seems to show some kind of internal tilted disk supposedly visible through the...

Re: Question checking oil level in Yamaha outboard

The engine oil filler tube has a yellow plastic cap that screws into the tube. Integrated into the plastic cap is a short dip stick. Unfortunately the manual is silent as to how to get an accurate...

Question checking oil level in Yamaha outboard

I recently purchased a new Yamaha 2.5 hp outboard for my dinghy. It has a sight glass for viewing the engine oil level, but for the life of me I cannot determine what I'm supposed to be seeing...

Does portable generator plug into shore power outlet.

I apologize in advance for what might be a dumb question, but I clearly am ignorant when it comes to portable generators. If I had a portable generator and I wanted to charge my batteries (instead of...

Source of 8 plait line for Maxwell HRC-FF 8 windlass

Maxwell recommends 9/16 inch 8 plait braid for this windlass. I can find 5/8 for sale but not 9/16. Anyone know a source? Or know if the windlass will accept 5/8 inch?

Bridle to hang RIB from davits

Purchased a RIB and for the first time I’ll have a dinghy to hang on my davits. The chandler suggested I construct a bridle. As best I can understand, this would be be made of 3 lines that attach to...

Re: Irony splice--can you clarify Toss' instructions?

Thinwater, can you tell me more about the advantages of using RP-25 on the splice? I found some information about it on line, but I'm still not sure how it would help the splice. Is it used just...

Re: Irony splice--can you clarify Toss' instructions?

Yes, he describes the single overhand knot. He gives two options (1) knot the two full strands (bulkier) or (2) separate each strand in half and knot one of the two pairs of half strands (less...

Re: Irony splice--can you clarify Toss' instructions?

Thank you. That answer reminds me I have another couple of questions. What's a "partial"tuck? Also, in the ABOK discussion of the "irony splice" the reader is directed to the long splice (2629) for...

Irony splice--can you clarify Toss' instructions?

Many thanks to those who took the time to help me solve my splice-windlass problem and suggested I consider the irony splice. I bought Toss' book and the instructions are mostly clear except the last...

Re: Windlass won't feed splice, tips?

My problem is that the Maxwell gypsy will not grab the splice. At all. My prior manual windlass did not like the splice either. But all I had to do was push the spice into the grippers of the gypsy...

Re: Windlass won't feed splice, tips?

Thanks for the offer of help. Your customer service orientation confirms why I chose a Maxwell.

Re: Windlass won't feed splice, tips?

I think that's the one Brion Toss calls a shovel splice. Supposed to be weaker than other splices. The irony splice is not woven through the chain.

Re: Windlass won't feed splice, tips?

Maybe my problem is that I made the splice quite tight. I thought that was the correct approach. I can try making it looser and see if that helps it feed better.

Re: Windlass won't feed splice, tips?

Great tip on the irony splice. I've ordered the Brion Toss book and ABOK.

I looked to see if there was a video on YouTube showing the making of this splice but didn't have any luck. Is there a...

Re: Windlass won't feed splice, tips?

Thanks. I hope it gets better with time. There's no way I can easily get to the rode below decks to put tension on.

Re: Windlass won't feed splice, tips?

Yes, tapered back splice. The windlass absolutely refuses to grab and feed the splice.
