Re: Dyneema or nylon webbing as strop for preventer

as Chris JHC posted, attach the preventer to the boom very near to the attachment of the mainsheet. Keep the forces in line so you don't break your boom.
Dyneema is plenty strong, but doesn't cleat...

I think you have a great idea, to use a long soft shackle. Quite brilliant, actually.
Just be sure that things are oriented such that the two limbs of the shackle share the load equally.

We have used this rode to chain splice for years. It is strong. It feeds over the roller and onto the gypsy smoothly. Don't make it any shorter than recommended. Longer is OK, but probably not...
