Re: Simple pumpless holding tank discharge with gravity and syphon

Can’t beat Gravity as a fool proof discharge? I regularly fill my holding tanks with detergent and fresh water, let them slip around for a few days and drop them. Sensitively of course.

Re: Perkins 4108 won’t start on start battery will start on house

Your start battery could have failed. Also your earth at the engine block could need cleaning. Take out the stud. Clean it. Also clean the thread into the block. Try attaching your earth to a bell...

Re: Is a 47ft boat with slab reefing too much for a couple compared to in mast furlin

Slab sail is pretty fool proof. Two people should find it easy to manage. Sailing short distances we quite often just use the head sail. This is where the power is. Easy to reel in some headsail if...

Re: Rebuild or Replace New?

Does the perkins need rebuilding? Spend some money giving the engine (and gearbox) a birthday. Keep what you have got.

Re: A bit embarrassing but..

Contact Spectra and get the manual online. I just run mine once a week regardless and pickle at the end of the season. After 8 years I still have to follow the manual and read it closely before each...

Re: Solo Ocean Crossing: 40 ft or 26 ft?

Agree with all of the above. Personally, for me, bigger is better. It’s not like you have to push or carry or row the bigger boat. Depends on the ocean you are crossing. The coconut run across the...

Re: Is this keel corroded?

I would just tell them the lumpy parts in the picture need to be scraped back to the raw lead or cast iron or whatever material it turns out to be. I would want to know what’s under the antifoul. Pop...

Re: Battery Upgrade or install a wind generator

If your batteries need charging while sailing at night then run the engine for an hour. A Lt or two of diesel is a pretty flexible solution. How often do you cruise through the night?

Re: Alternator not charging after nearby lighting strike

Take your alternator to an auto shop and have it checked. Get them to check/replace the bearings while they are at it. Always a good idea to carry a spare alternator (or two)👌

Re: Perkins diesel randomly stopping
