Re: Actual Ah demand for AirCon

Chris from Balmar here. We are owned by Dometic, so I have run some numbers on our new Voyager variable speed AC units. The great thing about variable speed units is that when you slow a compressor...

Re: Charging LFP dropin questions

Chris from Balmar here.
My 2 cents:
1 - use a DCDC from the house to charge the start batt. Simple, inexpensive
2- Use our APM on each alternator

Re: Two AGM in Parallel. One gets warm.

Do you have the battery cables attached to only one battery, or is the positive on one and the negative on the other? This can lead to unequal charging/discharging if they are both on the same...

Re: Two alternators controlled by single Wakespeed regulator

Chris from Balmar here. Concerning the N vs P type regulation, I have a customer story told to me last week. A service guy from Austria visited the Balmar booth last week at METS in Amsterdam. He...

Re: System redesign to drop in LFP

Chris from Balmar here. The output possible from an alternator is dependant on many factors, such as the overall design, rpm, temperature and how strongly the field is driven. All Balmar MC and ARS...

Re: Xantrex external regulator bulk charge

Hi, Chris from Balmar here. Balmar made that regulator for Xantrex, I believe it is a rebadged ARS-4. It does not have the granular control needed to properly charge lithium batteries. I would...

Re: Balmar 618, fuse blowing

Chris from Balmar here. The typical cause of the 15A power fuse blowing is voltage spikes from load dumps. Not many alternators draw more than 15A, but that is possible.

The MC-618 is rated for...

Re: BMS disconnect question?

This is NOT how the APM is designed, but there are other devices like this on the market. We chose not to take that particular path for a number of reasons, including that once the cap fills,...

Re: Why don't production boats have external alternator regulation

You want the BMS to control power to the ignition circuit.

The lithium profile on the MC-618 has a preset temp limit of 90C.

Re: Why don't production boats have external alternator regulation

The MC-618 works great with Lithium. If you have a communicating BMS that has external relay control, you can use that turn on/off the regulator if the battery does not want charge. The key with...

Re: Why don't production boats have external alternator regulation

Chris from Balmar here. We do have an option to easily convert your Valeo altenator to external regulation. It is a kit with the parts for the alternator, which is an easy DIY, + a MC-618 regulator:...

Re: insufficient battery alternator charging for lithium battery

Chris from Balmar here. The stock Valeo alternators are internally regulated at a single voltage setpoint. There are two issues that are limiting your charge. 1 is the voltage setpoint is low enough...

Re: Need a new alternator

Chris from Balmar here. If you are damaging the diodes in one of our alternators every 100 hours, then there is something about the installation that is causing problems. I would make this statement...

Re: How to charge at a given C rate?

If you install our SmartShunt, connect it to a MC-618, and use the Bluetooth gateway, you can adjust Max Field % from the App. You can also do it just from the Color Display. It is not adjusting the...

Re: Balmar Alternator Protection Module (APM)

Hi, Chris from Balmar here. This issue is not with the APM specifically. You don't want small connectors under the battery cables anywhere. This would force the current from the cable to flow through...

Re: Shredded belts after lifepo4 upgrade

Chris from Balmar here.

Belts fail prematurely due to a few factors:

1. Misalignment
2. Improper tension

The actual culprit is usually heat, due to one or both of these issues.
