We have a 2010 Beneteau 40 located on the hard near Baltimore. It has a cast iron keel with some rust spots showing.

I'll sand the rusted areas to bare metal. What coating should I apply to the...

Re: Theft protection devices for dinghy?

I use a 20 foot length of 3/8" stainless chain. The chain is irremovably attached to the outboard using a custom security device I manufactured. The chain is threaded through the dinghy's subfloor...

Re: Normal coupler bolts?

The use of socket head cap screws with Nylock jam nuts looks perfect to me.

Those socket head cap screws are 20% stronger than grade 8 hex bolts.

I would use anti-seize compound when you...

Re: Sailboats 40-46': bed size matters

It sounds like you are looking for 'island berths', berths with access on both sides.

Also, look for 'owner's versions' of the boats you are considering, with fewer but more commodious berths.

Re: What's the problem with my windlass?

Windlass worm gearing becomes incredibly less efficient if the lube is not exactly the correct type, in good condition, clean and to the right level. This translates to reduced pull and increased...

Re: Not satisfied with Windlass operation

Windlasses are hopelessly underpowered. They draw a huge amount of current for the work that they do.

Worm gearing is the least efficient form of gearing and is vulnerable to stripping with only...

Re: How to solve weakness in Lofrans Tigres windlass

Measure the voltage and current simultaneously at the windlass as a starting point. You may be getting less current or voltage at the windlass than expected.

The Tigres and most all windlasses use...

Re: Encapsulated vs Bolt

My opinion is that bolt on keels have finer leading and trailing edges and a thinner section resulting in less drag. Also that you can't hole a bolt on keel as it's monolithic.

Among the bolt on...

Re: Why are alternators on marine engines so low geared 1:1,63-2 while alt can do 1:4

You certainly should increase the drive ratio of your alternator so it turns faster. A serpentine belt drive system is what you need.

Serpentine belts can overate at smaller driven pulley...

Re: galvanized cable vs chain

I'm concerned that swage ferrules will become sacrificial anodes in salt water.
I would check into the ferrule material carefully.

I'm wondering if any of the sailboats were motoring at the time of the attack?

Re: Dinghy prop 4 blade super weirdness

You might consider a Piranha propeller. They have interchangeable blades in different pitches you can try. Performance is close to that of a stainless steel prop.

Re: Water system spitting air on all faucets

Two things come to mind.
1. your vent is blocked so when you draw water you pull a vacuum in the tank
2. your line from the tank to the pump is pulling air

My boat had a bunch of Legris type...

Verify that bearings are free and that gearing is lubricated. Worm gears will not perform unless an adequate supply of the correct type of lubricant is available.

Check that...
