Re: Which % of saving would you spend for your cat

When I bought my new old boat, which was in far better than average condition for its model and age, I reserved 10% of the sum of the purchase price and known initial expenses to cover the...

Re: Fuel gauge wildly inaccurate, is that typical?

My fuel, water and holding tank gauges all are wildly inaccurate. Replacing them doesn't help. You learn to read levels by other signs.

Re: What to do with 6 inches?

I wouldn't touch that with a ten-foot pole. Or a six-inch one.

Re: Potential Buyer Asking for a "Test Drive"

Actually, what I was trying to do was to get the idea across to readers who may be interested that getting a written statement of agreement you're free to call a contract if it pleases you isn't the...

Re: Potential Buyer Asking for a "Test Drive"

Best of luck selling your boat without a broker, then. You can do it, but your market is restricted. And you should speak with a lawyer, or better yet a law professor, about that point of a document...

Re: Potential Buyer Asking for a "Test Drive"

The written document is not the contract. It's evidence of a contract, its terms given presumptive preference should a dispute go to court. A piece of paper does not remove the issue of trust in...

Re: Potential Buyer Asking for a "Test Drive"

Most of the boat brokers I've met know full well that most buyers need to look at quite a few before making an offer. They're also pretty good at judging whether or not you're really in the market....

Re: Potential Buyer Asking for a "Test Drive"

A ten percent deposit on a $50k boat, handed over to a stranger with no professional standing or obligations, isn't something anyone in his right mind would do. For that large a sum you need an...

Re: Treated Lumber vs Teak

They've got the arsenic out of it. Treated lumber now isn't nearly as bad as it was twenty years ago.

That said, I used cypress for grating and seat slats on my cruiser. I wish you could still get...

Re: Treated Lumber vs Teak

There's a naval architect, specializing in small boats, located in Bayboro, North Carolina. His name is Graham Byrne, and he designed the popular "Spindrift."

I needed a tender, so bought a kit...

Re: Has the all-electric galley come of age?

I suspect people who don't want propane aboard would be even more averse to hydrogen.

Re: Has the all-electric galley come of age?

Induction stoves are promising and twice as thermally efficient as gas, which is half again as efficient as electrical resistance, but even with them you have to suck quite a bit of 110V or 220V...

Re: Running out of diesel, no wind.

Line up the crew on the stern, have them face forward and drop their pants, then after all those beans you'll have enough jet propulsion to get you home.

Re: Fuel System

I once found a hiding leak by using a little electric fuel transfer pump at the pickup to pressurize the system.

Mine, too. I think their engineers suggest it in order to blow out the dirt from head and exhaust.

Re: Do you live the "Jimmy Buffet lifestyle"?

Heheh ... Well, you know, boats are growing smaller, or we're growing bigger, or something. Midsize cruisers now start at 37', I'm told. Anything under that is therefore, by process of elimination,...

Re: Jabsco - small leak by handle

That said, the problem is with Jabsco's design and build. This sort of thing is going to happen. The pumps should be made to handle it.

Re: Potential Buyer Asking for a "Test Drive"

You're risking virtually nothing by going out with him for a couple of hours. All it would cost you is a little diesel fuel.

If he gives you a deposit, he's running the risk he'll have trouble...
