Re: Grand Cayman Canals in 1984: Question for a Work of Fiction

I chose Cemetery Beach for a couple of reasons. One, its proximity to some of the tourist attractions, ones that would experience development over the next few decades--two of my characters are...

Re: Grand Cayman Canals in 1984: Question for a Work of Fiction

Thank you so much for weighing in! Yes, I like what that informatin suggests. it does seem that by 1984 the canals were well underway if not fully developed. At least that's what I'm going with,...

Re: Grand Cayman Canals in 1984: Question for a Work of Fiction

Thank you so much for your responses!
I'm afraid I need to stick with the boat I've chosen for the story--it's an important part of the plot. If the Shores are a bit on the shallow end, perhaps...

Re: Question for a Work of Fiction: Port Authorities—NOLA and Grand Cayman

The skipper holds an American passport but resides in Grand Cayman where the boat is registered. I'm inclined to agree with Wallaby, that I'm getting too sidetracked with particulars that have no...

Grand Cayman Canals in 1984: Question for a Work of Fiction

I had this posted over in the Off-Topics threads, but received no responses--maybe it's the question, or wrong category. Anyway, perhaps someone over here can help.

I’m hoping someone here might...

Re: Question for a Work of Fiction: Port Authorities—NOLA and Grand Cayman

Thanks for the info! Hopefully it was roughly the same back in the 80s.

Re: Question for a Work of Fiction: Port Authorities—NOLA and Grand Cayman

The boat is documented in Grand Cayman. And upon returning to the island, it will have 2 US citizens. I'm assuming documentation is required.

Re: Question for a Work of Fiction: Port Authorities—NOLA and Grand Cayman

Yeah, I think you're right and I appreciate your weighing in. I'm also a little OCD when it comes to detail, always nervous that I'll annoy someone who knows better! And in all honesty, I knew...

Re: Question for a Work of Fiction: Port Authorities—NOLA and Grand Cayman

The SS RHAPSODY would be a really great detail! Alas, it seems she was pulled off the sandbar by April 2, a month before my plot timeline. I will certainly do a little more research on...

Re: Question for a Work of Fiction: Port Authorities—NOLA and Grand Cayman

All great information--thanks!

I'm curious about when the boat leaves, taking on passengers that will be sailing to Grand Cayman. Any idea what the procedure is when departing NOLA? Could they...

Question for a Work of Fiction: Port Authorities—NOLA and Grand Cayman

Although I’m writing fiction, I hate to ignore some of the less romantic aspects of cruising, such as dealing with port authorities.

The setting is in the spring of 1984. For reasons important to...

Grand Cayman Canals in 1984: Question for a Work of Fiction

I know this is a Cruisers forum, but I’m hoping someone here might have some knowledge of Grand Cayman in the 1980s. I have Googled, consulted members on Grand Cayman travel forums, and even inquired...

Re: Weather, Navigation, and Communication Question for a Work of Fiction

Thank you all for so much helpful information!

For the purposes of my plot, which is more character than action driven, I don’t need a full-blown hurricane or tropical storm. All I need is a...

Re: Weather, Navigation, and Communication Question for a Work of Fiction

Ha! I often use movies as points of reference when I begin research (especially when it comes to something I've never done, like sailing on a 47' boat in the Gulf!), but details can be as subject to...

Re: Weather, Navigation, and Communication Question for a Work of Fiction

I don't necessarily need a hurricane, but surely there are some crazy storms that pop up or move in from...hmmm...where exactly would a storm move in from during mid- to late-April? I'm thinking...

Re: Weather, Navigation, and Communication Question for a Work of Fiction

That sounds like a tense journey!
For the purposes of my plot, I don't need anything as severe as a hurricane, but rough enough weather to shift the crew's focus. Above you mention that if they...

Re: Weather, Navigation, and Communication Question for a Work of Fiction

Also, is there any particular protocol that a skipper would follow when met with seriously bad weather? (I'm being a little vague to keep all my options open.)

Weather, Navigation, and Communication Question for a Work of Fiction

As I slog my way through the first draft, finally writing the portion about sailing in the Gulf of Mexico, I have a simple question—or maybe it’s not so simple.
Here are the particulars (probably...

Re: Need Cooking-While-Under-Way Advice for a Work of Fiction

Thanks for the tips--I really like the idea of of a work surface on the gimballed stove, and I'm definitely going to have to work the belt harness into the story. :)

Re: Need Cooking-While-Under-Way Advice for a Work of Fiction

I definitely plan to get in some serious nautical reading before I undertake the writing of the sailing part of the story--good for familiarizing myself with terminology and seeing how other writers...
